Cross Country Skiing
One of the most popular winter activities in Portland is cross country skiing. This can be just as vigorous as other forms of skiing but a lot less terrifying to some. All the trails are kept in excellent condition and are machine groomed. The landscape is typical picturesque Maine countryside and woods. You don't even need to have your own skis to enjoy the environment of Smiling Hill Farm as they have a fully equipped rental shop so you can rent everything you need.

This is perfect if you are new to cross country skiing and are not sure if it is for you or not yet. You can rent and entire kit of skis, boots and poles for $10 or each item individually for $5 each. Smiling Hill Farm is open for cross country skiing only on weekends and school vacations.
