Before discussing the features that set this pitbull breed apart, some major points need to be made. If you want to understand the nature of these dogs, you have to leave behind you all your experience with dogs, no matter how rich or diverse it has been. This dog is not like the rest. . Yes, it is a dog. But this is where any resemblance to its peers ends!

Pitbull dog is a result of a long process of selection in circumstances identical to the cicumstances of gladiator fights in Ancient Rome and pitbulls can rightfully claim to be victims of human cruelty. The original purpose was for them to fight wild beasts. In bull-baiting and bear-baiting fights, american pit bull terrier, together with the wild beasts, provided entertainment to crowds eager to enjoy the sight of death and torture. Numerous dogs perished on these death rinks. Survivors were priced expensively and used for breeding while the dead are something humanity has no reason to be proud of itself.

After bullfights and bear-fights were banned in the eighteenth century pitbulls continued to fight, this time against each other. In the civillised world dog-fights have been banned already but they still continue, violating the laws. Thus nature fo pitbull has selected two major traits in this breed -dog training their exceptional friendliness to people, regardless if the people are familiar or total strangers, on the one hand, and fierce intolerance to their own species, even of the opposite sex. There are exceptions, of course - pitbull who fully socialise with other dogs, who are "seeing ey" dogs, or are used in the army and the police. Yet they are still only exceptions. You shouldn't think that if your 4-months old pitbull puppy is playing with the neighbour's shepherd right now, his dormant instincts won't awaken when he is a year and a half old, and he won't attack other dogs then.

Unfortunately, Pit Bulls are the breed of choice for dog fighters, drug dealers, meth cookers and other low life types because of their powerful bone and jaw structure. The dogs that you hear about attacking people are kept on short chains, beaten, starved, and fed gun powder. The gun powder contains a substance called Salt Peter which causes permanent neurological damage causing the dog to become violent. Instead of taking the owners who treat dogs this way to task in both criminal and civil cases, people knee jerk and ban a breed instead of banning the actions of the owners who render the dogs into what amount to ticking time bombs. As far as the article here stating that "one day your puppy will snap and eat you", that's bull$hit. I'm throwing the flag on that. I've raised litters of pit bulls that went on to be police dogs, therapy dogs, assistance dogs, and as a responsible breeder, kept track of where the pups went and how they looked and acted. One reason is to en
