History of the Upside Down Christmas Tree - Per "Legends of the First Christmas Tree", it is believed that during the 7th century, a monk from Devonshire used the triangular shape of the Fir tree to describe the Holy Trinity. By the 12th century, the Fir tree was being hung upside down from ceilings in Central Europe as a symbol of Christianity at Christmas Time. Popularity and Tree Choices
The upside-down trees are so popular that companies like Hammacher Schlemmer can't keep any of their different models in stock, even after they increased the amount they ordered from the previous year.
Prices on upside-down trees vary greatly, from $300 for a 5 foot pre lit crystal white tree to a 9 foot pre lit tree for $730 at "Christmas Tree for Me". Sam's Club sells a 7.5 foot realistic tree that is pre lit with 800 clear light bulbs for $200 online and they do deliver. QVC also sells a few different types starting at $250. One site that I found that sells a variation from the chandelier to flocked or clear white is Great Occasions.
Advantages of an Upside Down Tree
The Christmas tree can either be suspended by a bracket on the ceiling or supported with a base on the floor, there are even ones that hang on the walls or in the corners. The tree can be purchased pre-lit with clear or multi color lights, flocked, decorated or bare.
You may be thinking, why on earth would I want my tree to be upside down? Well you may be surprised at how many reasons there are. Just think if you have any small children wondering around or a curious cat, you don't have to worry about them breaking your collectible Christmas balls, or even worse, tipping the tree over. It also offers a better way to display your beautiful tree decorations, not letting them get lost in the foliage.
The tree being about the ground also leaves you a lot of room for the hundreds of presents you previously couldn't purchase because you had no room for them. Okay that may be exaggerated a bit but think of all that floor space you would have. Another reason why this tree is fabulous for someone with limited space, such as in an apartment.
