When this Presidential race started and Barack Obama was introduced as a potential candidate, my first impression was damn, you go man! Then almost immediately another thought crossed my mind.

Growing up in the Deep South of the 60's, my brain was already programmed to say, "I hope they let him make it". "I bet they don't"!

Because my dad was 1/2 Cherokee Indian, I had grew up hearing him called a "Half Breed". I didn't equate his struggle to the black struggle until recently. I grew up with blacks and were friends with many. I couldn't figure out why people treated them so bad. After being married for 16 years to a racist, then having two daughters who married black men, I have seen several different sides over the years.

As in another story, I kept my two mixed grandchildren for awhile in sunny Florida. The experience was a game changer for me.

Now, in this race for the White House, we are seeing the ignorance really expose itself. No matter what race you are in this country today, this election is going to divide this country as never before. The U.S. has NEVER ALLOWED a BLACK Man or woman to hold any office this high. Condileeza Rice has her position because even though George Bush is an asshole, he comes from a part of Texas where he had no choice but to recognize diversity. Women and Blacks have come a long ways, but to the Good Ole Boys of this world, they "Ain't fixing to be no damn President"!

The stakes in the race to Washington are not your typical run of the mill Presidential Race. The implications and the unwarranted fear of the unknown in this particular race is drawing lines between young and old, black and white and the other people who are just not sure.

You would assume(we know what that word means) in an age of the internet, the many advancements we have made and the passing of several generations, America would be more united to see the country work right vs the fight being about the color of someone's skin.

We are at a crossroads in America in 2008.

In this very critical election we are watching the desperation of the white man. We are watching a scenario that could cost a man his life and could cost a family their loved one. Why?

Those who wish to promote Obama on the basis of race, either because they, too, are black, or because they have some strange sense of "white guilt", are being just as racist as those who deny Obama their support on the basis of race.

It really is a shame that it comes down to stuff like this.

I am so sorry that your family and grandchildren had to endure that. It is so wrong. I remember getting in trouble with my parents when I grew up in SC. Schools integrated and I was in junior high. There were eight black kids among 750 whites. From the minute they got on the bus that first day, they were treated unmercifully. Although I was raised to hate blacks, my heart immediately saw the terror in one girl's eyes and my heart melted. I tried to be a friend and I got in big trouble at home. I've watched many bi-racial children and couples go through this. I hate it! If I saw racism (from my perspective) in either of the candidates I support, that would be a deal breaker for me. I hope your family and grandchildren receive lots of love and know that all of us are not like that.

We are each judged according the good we do. You keep working at it the way you have to and I will as well. I guess growing up watching blacks degraded past the point of reason has made me a rebel. I have 4 mixed grandchildren. I experienced the racism in Florida firsthand. I have had people take their children from the park because of race. John McCain has proven on many occasions his opinion of other races. Sarah Palin is proving it now. I understand and appreciate your willingness to believe. Calling names doesn't fix anything. Conversation and calling it out when you see it, increases knowledge and awareness. I am just a person who confronts the wrongs in a different way via the gift God has blessed me with. The ability to write and a passion for right. Thanks for the comments and reads..

Rose, at least we can respectfully disagree. Too much ugliness on these posts and elsewhere. Without going into a lot of detail, having lived in FL unti four years ago and now in deep south Alabama, I have seen A LOT of racism from blacks against whites. Then I turn around and see it whites against blacks. Then I talk to hispanics who think this about blacks. And on and on. The point is we just keep working at getting people to stop. Someone asked me how I'd feel if my son married a black. I said, "just fine." I don't believe McCain or Palin are racists. I don't believe I have turned away so as not to see. Again, thanks for not calling me names because we disagree. The best we can all do is to be a class act!

I agree with your right to disagree. I have done quite a bit of research and history fact finding on they way both mccain and palin have always been very racist. As in McCain's taped reference to an oriental person as a "gook". You believe what you want, but when someone in the audience stands up and shouts "Kill the Terrorists" in stupid florida and Sarah Palin just smiles, you and your friends might want to rethink your analysis.I have been listening to rednecks call blacks, niggers for too many years and it hasn't been that long ago since I heard it again. My husband worked in fl. for 3 years. mind you i am considered white and he is too. the whites referred to other employees who were black as jigaboo. this was 4 years ago. Don't be fooled by your desire not to hear.

Born and bred in the hatred of the south, but I have changed. I do nonprofit work among several races. I have done overseas trips in totally black communities. But, I disagree with your article. You seem to spew a lot of venom yourself. I don't think they are showing racism nor do my black friends. It was Hilary and Bill who said that Obama tried to play the race card and it infuriated the Clintons and others. So, it's in the "ears" of the beholder.

I am ashamed of Sarah Palin, right after a civl debate, playing the race card so blatantly by calling Obama someone who consorts with terrorists. McCain has been even worse, but he is known as someone who oftern shoots off his mouth without thinking. To appeal to hatred within Americans to extract their votes is beneath contempt, but it has earned my contempt. Somewhere Barry Goldwater, Abraham Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, etc. roll over in their graves.

Great article. The Republicans are really shaming America. Their racial slurs and Machiavellian tactics are alarming. It is too late for McCain....he will lose.
