Plan B, the birth control pill that prevents pregnancy after unprotected sex, is now available at the stores in the US. In addition, with it came a big controversy about the sellers' ethics: are they allowed or not to deny selling the pills to their costumers for reasons of conscience? I will not go deeply in this polemic question, but I simply think that if your profession is selling products to a diverse population, you should know that sometimes you would not agree with some things you have to sell. Personally, I think nobody has the right to deny or approve medication to the ones that require it; Do their job is enough advice for their ethical doubts. Every advance in medicine that helps to reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies must be well appreciated, because there are too many young mothers without education or jobs, and the system in charge to protect children is overwhelmed working with kids without families. The Plan B pill is the solution to many problems, and it is wrong to avoid it.
What the Plan B Pill is, and how it works? This product is a medication that contains the hormone levonorgestrel, the one that stops the conception, in a higher dose that the traditional birth control pills do. The Plan B pill will stop the release of the egg from the ovary, and it may prevent the fertilization of the egg or the attachment of the egg to the uterus. This pill will work better the sooner we take it, because time is essential to stop the fertilization process, so it is better if is used 72 hours after the sex. If we take it in that frame of time, it will reduce the possibilities of pregnancy in 89%. Even it would be more effective we use the pill during the first 24 hours after sex. In general, if we use the Plan B correctly, its success is high; seven of ten women who use it to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex will not be pregnant.
