October 8, 1990 -- 24th Country Music Association Award: George Strait wins

Strait, called an “uncompromising traditionalist,” accepted a trophy at the annual Country Music Awards amongst contemporaries such as Clint Black, Ricky Van Shelton, and more. He won the award for “Entertainer of the Year,” and was visibly moved, saying: “I'm truly speechless: I don't have a speech.

October 8, 1986 -- Run DMC calls for a day of peace among LA street gangs

Run DMC, after what is referred to as a “hedonistic tour” in which Run himself said: “...on any given night you could walk out into the hallway and see topless girls running room to room”, encountered their share of violence during the tour itself. Most notably, the Long Beach tour stop, during which the Bloods and the Crips endured a bloody gangfight, resulting in 34 hospitalized fans.

The group was blamed for the incident in question, and Jam Master Jay deferred the media by saying: “We didn't have nothing to do with it. We had no control over it. We only stand for positive things.

October 8, 1985 -- Little Richard seriously injured in a car accident

Little Richard, a.k.a. Richard Penniman of “Tutti Frutti” fame-claim, reportedly fell asleep at the wheel in California and crashed into a telephone pole. He was seriously injured, but managed to recover.


October 8, 1984 18th Country Music Association Award: Alabama wins


This was notable because they were the first act ever to win three consecutive CMA Entertainer of the Year awards. They became the first group to win Entertainer of the Year in 1981, and continued to win until 1984. TV.com's Alabama trivia page says that this is act is apparently still “unrivalled.”
