When looking for a job and interviewing, salary negotiation is the most important single thing you will have to deal with. Everyone would love to be paid every single dollar that they believe they are worth, of course that doesn't always happen. Often times people only receive a fraction of what they believe they are worth, and could get much more if the knew of proper salary negotiation techniques. Before thinking about negotiating, we have to realize that there's far more too it than the dollar amount that you take home. There's also benefits, incentive pay such as stock options, that you need to consider when looking at various offers from different companies.
When going into the negotiation, you have to know what you want. Decide in advance what hours you would like to work, what benefits you need, and about what you think you would like to get paid. If you don't know what you want outright, there's no way that you can negotiate well enough to get something good. Of course you can't just say, I want a million dollars a year when looking for a job, you have to learn what is realistic. In order to do this, you'll need some research.
There are a great number of websites which will help you determine what is the going rate for employees in the position you are applying for in your area. CareerJournal and Salary.com both have excellent statistics which show about what someone in your position could make.
Now that you know about what people in your field and area make, you need to know the alternatives to a negotiated employment agreement. You need to know what other job offers and present them for negotiation. If your alternatives are better than your current job offer, you should show them this information and see if they can provide something better. If not, it's okay to withdraw and pursue other job offers. If they have given you the best job offer you've seen to date, you should probably take it.
