Maintaining a vegetarian diet will you are pregnant isn't very difficult but there are some things you should be aware of. Read on to discover important tips for the pregnant vegetarian.

Tips for the Pregnant Vegetarian - Getting Enough Protein

The most valuable information that can be given to the pregnant vegetarian is how to get enough protein. As a vegetarian, this is something you must cope with on a regular basis anyway but while you're pregnant, your needs have increased.

For the pregnant vegetarian with a lacto-vegetarian diet, adding a few extra servings of low fat milk products to the daily diet should do the trick, along with one or more servings of a protein dish. This could be anything from a veggie burger to a serving of cooked lentils. Eating high protein vegetable foods is a very important part of the daily life of a pregnant vegetarian.

If you are vegan, three or four servings of soy, soymilk and/or vegetable protein added to the daily diet should give you plenty of protein to meet the needs of the pregnant vegetarian.

Tips for the Pregnant Vegetarian - Getting Enough Nutrients

When you are a pregnant vegetarian, it's a good idea to speak to your doctor about your diet so that they can recommend any dietary supplements and/or food sources to help you get the correct amount of nutrients. Most of the time, all of the nutrients you will need for a healthy pregnancy can be gained through a vegetarian, whole-food diet.

However, it is always a good idea for the pregnant vegetarian to take a complete vitamin supplement to make up for any nutrients that the diet may lack. You may also wish to take an additional B vitamin supplement as this is the vitamin that vegetarians are often short. Your doctor will be able to recommend a good prenatal vitamin and/or any additional supplements to help you get all the nutrients you and your baby need as a pregnant vegetarian.
