The following is adapted from a conversation regarding why some people win `random drawings', and others do not, or at least not as often. The context is the random draw system of the Idaho Department of Fish and Game for controlled hunts. The author is writing to an acquaintance who is complaining that he is never drawn, but his buddy is.

"Seriously - find out your buddy's `secret'. It's no accident that he is getting drawn and you are not. Find out how he thinks. Discover his mental approach. It sounds like you are in an endless loop of not getting drawn. I suspect that, consciously or unconsciously - he puts in thinking he will get drawn, - and he gets drawn!!! You are probably in a rut thinking you won't get drawn - and, guess what? - you don't get drawn. On the other hand, there is something in your buddy that is pulling (attracting) draw success to him.

"I don't doubt that your strongly want to get drawn ... but attracting success is not based on want, it is based on inner expectation, inner thinking. You are afraid you won't get drawn, and you get what you are afraid of.

"Statistically, the chances that you would NOT get drawn 8 years in a row in that particular draw is really not all that astronomical ... about 60/40. In fact, statistically, for you to put in for 11 years in a row and NOT get drawn would be about a straight 50/50 ... a coin toss. So, statistically, you have nothing to complain about. Illustrated another way: let's say there is a group of 10 of you hunters that have been putting in for the last 8 years for that unit. On the average - six of you would not have been drawn at all during those 8 years, and four would have been drawn (at least once). So, you are actually with the majority.

"But what is interesting is your buddy. For him to get drawn 3 (or more times) in this same eight years is ... assuming he had to sit two of the years out before re-applying (Idaho regs) ... one in 233.

Did You Know?
Why some people always seem to win random drawings, and some never seem to.
