2008-9 Detroit Red Wings Season Begins

The Detroit Red Wings will start off their 2008-9 season opener at The Joe Louis Arena in Detroit on Thursday, October 9th against a rival Original Six team, the Toronto Maple Leafs. Game time is set for 7PM EDT.

The game will be preceded with a special banner raising ceremony to honor the Red Wings winning of the Stanley Cup trophy last season. It was Detroit's fourth championship in eleven seasons starting back to when they won the Cup in 1997. Several retired Wings, such as Dominic Hasek and

Dallas Drake, will attend the banner raising presentation.

Each fan attending the game on Opening Night will receive a complimentary 8" x 14" replica championship banner, courtesy of Bank of America.

The Wings just finished up their pre-season run and are in the process of cutting down the team of talented players to 23. Some of those cuts include sending forwards Darren Helm and Ville Leino and defenseman Jonathan Ericsson to Grand Rapids. Defenseman Aaron Downey was placed on waivers and a few players such as Darren McCarty and Chris Chelios are currently on injured reserve.

With all the young talent coming to the team, the Wings are heavily favored to be a good contender to make a run at another championship this year. Also new player additions such as Marion Hossa will also add to the Wings fire-power this season.

One highlight to watch this year: Instead of the traditional New Year's Eve game that the Wings usually host at the Joe, the Wings will be flying to the nearby city of Chicago to face off with another Original Six rival, the Chicago Blackhawks to play a historic game outside at Wrigley Field. This game is the next in a trend of outside games starting to pop up in the NHL. Last season the Buffalo Sabres hosted the Pittsburgh Penguins in Ralph Wilson Stadium where the Buffalo Bills usually play.

Only time will tell if the Wings will be playing long into June next year, but once again with great management and talented players the Wings have set themselves up for another fantastic season.
