'It's all Greek to me' is an understatement for hundreds of travelers who embark on a trip to Greece for the first time. From dining out to getting around the villages and cities, a vacation in Greece can be both a learning experience, and complete culture shock. Greek culture has a strong focus on family, a sense of connection to the country and lands, and a sincere desire to host and entertain visitors and guests. Plate breaking is also referred to as 'kefi', an unrestrained expression of joy. This happens at Greek celebrations often, including weddings, or any announcements. Some Greek restaurants have a designated 'smashing area'--how's that for a fun ritual?

Interesting article. Did you run into the plate-breaking tradition? We saw that happen at a restaurant in Paris and someone who is Greek told me it had something to do with appreciation for the meal. Would love to learn more.
