There are many reasons why people decorate their back porch. However, the major reason is to save space. Many homes have small living rooms or a combination of a kitchen and living room area. This reduces the space for a Christmas tree, packages and decorations. As a result, many families decide to decorate their back porch if they have one.

When you decide to decorate your back porch, there are several factors to consider. Is it an open porch area that is exposed to the elements? Is it closed and heated? Is it big enough for your decorating purpose? Can it easily be viewed by visitors? Is it a secure area from theft and vandalism? All of these are legitimate considerations.

Once you decide to decorate your back porch, here are some ideas to keep in mind. Since the back porch is used for little, you can be as aggressive as you want in your decorating. Clear everything out of the area that is not needed. You want this to now be the center or main focus point of your holiday decorations.

Next, clean the area well. Do the windows, floors, cabinets, and furniture that remains. Be sure that all doors and windows are secure. Once your decorations are up, it is very hard to move items to do things.

Decorate your walls first. Some individuals like to trim their borders with lights or Christmas rope. This accents other wall items that will be placed up. If you use lights, don't overload your electrical circuits. If you use any candles on the walls, be sure they are in a free burning area. This way you can avoid fire. Always keep candles far away from the tree.

Have an area for Christmas cards and your Advent calender where they can easily be viewed by family and friends. You can do this with any holiday pictures, too.

Adjust your wall and ceiling lighting. Go with 30 watt bulbs. This way your candles and holiday lights will stand out better.

Set up holiday music to be heard inside the area. You can use tape or CD players. If you don't want to get too fancy, then just use a simple radio. Music and lighting are so important in setting the mood for the season.
