Awhile back I wrote an article that gave a review of what may well be the single scariest Halloween TV special of all time: The Paul Lynde Halloween Special. Okay, to be perfectly honest, I caught that special for my review courtesy of a bootleg version. But now you can spend one of the most frightening hours of your life simply by putting the Paul Lynde Halloween Special into your Netflix queue. Yes, Netflix has Paul Lynde's amazingly campy and totally bizarre tribute to all things spooky available for rental. As of the writing of this article, it is not available for instant viewing on the Roku, but that may change. I do truly hope it will change.

Donny & Marie. Margaret Hamilton as a now very old Wicked Witch of the West. Roz Kelly as Pinky Tuscadero from Happy Days. Florence Henderson in all her 70s Brady Bunch galore. And the topper: KISS singing "Beth." I'm telling you again: You simply do not have the right to say you have lived until you have watched Paul Lynde, the worst kept secretly gay celebrity until Clay Aiken, singing "Disco Baby" along with the rest of the cast. You may know this song as "Disco Lady" but the lyrics were changed...for obvious reasons. There are some TV shows that insinuate themselves in the darkest recesses of the viewer's mind: the Zuni doll section of Trilogy of Terror, the earwig episode of Night Gallery, and the episode of Full House where Bob Saget was put on trial for molesting his daughters. (Okay, sick joke, I know.) If you do put the Paul Lynde Halloween Special into your Netflix queue you need to be forewarned about watching it at your own risk.

...looked like they did that gig only for the check. Plus, didn't Margaret Hamilton say once that she hated wearing that green makeup as the witch in "Wizard of Oz?" They must have paid her a bundle to dress up like the witch again for this special 37 years later. At least it's fun seeing some of those legendary and familiar faces, and seeing them still looking fairly young...

I happened to see this listed on IMDb.com's "Hit List" tonight and thought I'd leave comment and finally catch up with your other articles. After catching a condensed version of the Paul Lynde Halloween Special on Youtube recently (yes, Youtube conveniently bypassed that copyright violation), it looked familiar to me and I'm pretty sure I saw it when five years old. But even seeing that condensed version was almost reminiscent of an SNL sketch parodying the 70's. Most parodies of the 70's exaggerate to the extreme some of the characteristics of these types of shows--yet this one has every 70's cliche in the book. And Paul Lynde was hilarious when being off-the-cuff on "Hollywood Squares." Here, though, he's stuck with adhering to a contrived script that's only funny in fits and starts rather than every line being a winner. My favorite line is when Margaret Hamilton introduces each member of KISS by first name to Lynde--and PL replies "I always love a good religious group." Yes, KISS lo

Wow! I never knew ol' 'Center Square' himself had a 'ween special. Does he do Uncle Arthur from 'Bewitched'?

P.S. I hope anyone reading this article also realizes you have an excellent collection of guides here, featuring movies now available for the Roku, through Netflix.

I have this one but I'm wondering if it would be safe to watch while snowed in during a blizzard or if I'd feel compelled to go outside for a breather? I await your judgment on this. I really am waiting for the opportune moment to watch it (again) with my family but I'm not sure being snowbound is the best time....although they wouldn't really have anywhere else to go, would they?

Lynde is one of my favorites. Thank you for the info. Roberta B.
