Conflict is a daily reality which increases with times of change. Our needs, values, goals, and opinions naturally clash with those of others. Some conflicts are minor, and easily fixed of overlooked. Other require successful resolution and mediation so they will not escalate.Conflicts occur when a person believes that their wants are not the same as what other individuals want. When properly managed and constructively handled, conflict can help maintain creativity and liveliness in any situation.
Sometimes conflict can excalate into dangerous situations,. Dangerous conflict should be resolved with great care and diplomacy.
Successful conflict resolutions will leave both parties feeling satisfyed with the results. While each person may feel that they compromised, they leave with an aggreement for a solution that works for both parties.
Some positive results of conflict are:
Better ideas are produced
Individuals are forced to look at and find new approaches
Long standing problems come to the surface and are dealt with.
Different individual's points of view are clarified.
Creativity is challenged and communication in improved.
When conflicts are not resolved satisfactorily to both parties:
Some individuals may feel demeaned or defeated.
The distance increases between some individuals.
A atmosphere of distrust and hatred increases.
A tendency towards self interest may increase.
Negative or irreparable conflict and damage may increase, such as emotional or Ph.ysical abuse or violence
Conflict Management
In managing conflict, individuals must understand their differences. if communication is opened and improved, new and different view of the conflict may appear. By searching for an agreement or positive outcome, each party can develop an appreciation for different opinions. Teaching hot to resolve conflicts will decrease violence by breaking negative cycles and power struggles in our homes, schools, and workplaces.
