Ironically, the recent guilty verdict in the case of O.J. Simpson on multiple counts or armed robbery and kidnapping, puts the spotlight on the serious problem of abuse during October, Domestic Violence Month. Many people feel that even though the guilty verdict was not for the murders of Nicole Simpson and Ron Goldman, a measure of justice is finally being meted out.

October is Domestic Violence Month

October is Domestic Violence Month, a cause so important that it needs to be on the public consciousness every day. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. The month of October was set aside to highlight the problem of domestic violence, with the intent to connect battered women's advocates across the nation.

According to the statement on the DVAP, the purpose of Violence Awareness Month is to support local networks in ongoing public education efforts, through public awareness, campaigns, strategies and technical assistance.

Definition of Domestic Violence

The American Medical Association defines intimate partner abuse as "the physical, sexual and/or psychological abuse to an individual perpetrated by a current or former intimate partner. While this term is gender-neutral, women are more likely to experience physical injuries and incur psychological consequences of intimate partner abuse."

In other words, while anyone can be a victim of domestic abuse, injuries are more likely to be sustained by the female.

O.J. Simpson and Nicole Brown Simpson

The murder trial of O.J. Simpson in the violent deaths of Nicole Simpson and friend Ron Goldman is one remembered by millions. Many people recall where they were when they watched the TV as the verdicts were read. In spite of all of the evidence presented, the verdict was "not guilty."

The murder of his ex-wife was just the end of a relationship that was reportedly filled with violence. During the trial, one piece of evidence was a 911 tape with a terrified Nicole Simpson exclaiming that O.J. was going to kill her.
