I know you went to rest
Almost twelve years ago
Father's Day is Sunday
I just wanted you to know
I still have all you gave me
Wrapped in lace and tied with a bow

The memories that you made with me
Forever live inside
The wooden cakes
You let me make
The nails I used as candles

The time you spent just being with me
Keep me company here today
I am never lonely, Daddy
You're just a heart beat away
You gave to me the best gift
Anyone can ever give
Memories of you and me
Inside of me you still live

I just wanted you to know Daddy
And thank you from my heart
For all the time you spent with me
Teaching from your heart

The first few years were very hard
I was blinded by the hurt
And then one day it came to me
While looking through my memory box
Bent down on my knee
All wrapped in lace and tied with a bow
I found the special card
The one you wrote to me just what I needed to know

"Pretty is, is pretty does"
"Always do good and then do better"
"Wise words from your very wise Dad"
"Now go out there and tackle life and hit a double header!"

I remember when I found it
Tucked away in my luggage so tight
When I left home to spread my wings
My first time going out on my own

I smiled as I bent there
Then tears began to drop
While reading how you signed it

"I was going to enclose some money
But I already sealed this up!"

You sealed it up and tied it
With heart strings so very tight
It made me miss you so when I found it
I wanted to come home

You said :

"Keep that with you when you miss me"
"Carry it in your heart"
"I have been with you from the start"
"I'll be with you forever"
"Now go out there and tackle life and hit a double header!"

As I write this Father's Day poem
I know you will receive
Because you're with me right now, Daddy
I know and I believe
Thank you Daddy for everything
All that you are and all that you lived
The faith. trust and belief
In life for no reason
Other than because
You just believed in all that is good
