A farm boy finds a dragon's egg which leads him on a journey where he discovers that he's a dragon rider and the one person who can defend his home against an evil king who killed off most dragon riders.

When I first saw the trailer for this movie I thought that the dragon looked really fake with CGI. Upon seeing the movie, I couldn't help but compare it to Lord of the Rings, by far a much better movie in every way. I forever christen Eragon as what Lord of the Rings would have been like if it had been done as a TV movie rather than a big-screen movie. The budget was larger but felt lower, mostly unknowns for many of the parts and a weaker story overall. This is not to say that this movie is a total washout or that you should skip it because it does have its positives. It is a little entertaining and readers of the book by Christopher Paolini might like it more. Having not read the book, I can not judge it as a comparison adaptation of the book but, knowing how most movies are, I highly doubt that this movie did the book justice. It feels like a watered-down action movie with a fantasy background.

As it stands in the movie, the story is not original at all. I've seen it done a dozen times, where the hero of the story was destined to be just that, legend turned real. If anyone has read Robert Jordan's wheel of Time series, you will know that in that series, the hero is a young farm boy who becomes the hero of legend, just like Eragon. Really, the only difference is that Eragon flies on a dragon. I'm guessing that the dragon riders are a lot cooler in the book because here it is rather boring, to me at least. The basic story here is easy to follow but not very mysterious or intriguing. It's definitely predictable which was rather boring too.

The story is very rushed, with major turning points occurring in the story almost instantaneously without any easing into the changes which probably are supposed to be occurring over long durations of time. I really don't like that shortcoming of the writing.

Also Cont. got to the Beor Mountains. Oh, and they totally screwed up the character of Angela. What was with turning her into this diva? Not cool. And she was supposed to be in the western coast city of Teirm. They also cut her werecat companion Solembum from the movie. He was an awesome character! They actually cut out everything that happened in Teirm (and that was a decent sized amount.) Sorry about that. I needed to vent. :-)

Cont. to keep the length of the movie reasonable. Murtagh was also great, except for a character change from the book. In the book he was LOATHE to go to the Varden - after he'd brought Eragon to their door, he was going to turn around and leave. In the movie he like, "Oh, you're looking for the Varden? I know the mountains. I can take you there!" That part seriously had me struggling to keep from laughing. Oh, and his scar is on his back in the book, not his stomach. And yeah, Rachel Weisz voice did not match with the character of Saphira. The Urgals were horrible. They basically look like guys in makeup in my opinion. The fact that Durza's skin progressively gets worse as the movie goes on is also hilarious. Also, in the movie didn't it take Saphira and Eragon (and Murtagh) less than a week to reach the Varden? In the book, it was a least a month. Maybe three. I can't remember too well - I read the book a couple years ago. Oh yeah, and they had to cross a desert before they g

I thought the book was pretty good, but the movie butchered it! I was scooted down in my seat in the movie theatre to stop myself from bursting out laughing. I must agree that the character of Eragon in the movie seemed rather dimwitted. I particularly liked the line, "I have skills!" when he wanted to go fight the Urgals and Brom wouldn't let him. It sounded very stupid. My friend and I enjoy mimicking him on the part whenever we need to laugh. I also agree about his fighting skills. The book spent a decent amount of time developing those skills if I remember correctly. They should have cut out the shots of Brom and Eragon riding through the beautiful landscape and instead showed Brom teaching Eragon how to fight and use his magic. There were too many sweeping shots of them riding through the mountains anyway. I, too, thought that Jeremy Irons did an excellent job in playing his character. The movie changed how Brom died, which was a bit odd, but I know movies have to change things

This kid read Robert Jordan and then retold the story. Poorly. Good writing for a 15 yr old, but the originality is missing. Originality is a must.

I love your reviews John and the humor that you put into them. I also like how much you see in them that others might not notice. Very well done

One dragon and an unoriginal story. I'd rather see the Wheel of Time done.

Hey, I loved this movie! Granted it's no Lord of the Rings but hey it's got DRAGONS and a nice little story to match.
