Right now, the hottest buzzword in college admissions is 'leadership', so make sure you demonstrate your ability to lead whenever possible on your college applications. But how exactly can you show colleges that you're a leader, not a follower? It's simple: get involved! Here are some tips for becoming a leader in your local community:

1)Earn a leadership position in a school club: If your school has clubs, don't just join one---lead one! Convince your fellow club members that you would make a great president/vice president/treasurer/secretary and then prove it to them once you're elected. Keep the club active so it doesn't die out before the next school year. If possible, try to get re-elected. Colleges love to see consistency and will be impressed if you hold the same leadership position for three or four years. If your school doesn't have clubs, then look to see what your community has to offer. Maybe there are clubs at your library, church, or recreational center.

2)Start a club: You can really snag an admissions officer's attention if you start a new club at school or in your community. Colleges will admire the initiative you've taken and will be even more convinced of your leadership skills if you can head the club and accomplish something worthwhile. If your establish a book club, you can try holding a neighborhood book drive and donate the books to the local pre-school, library, or literacy center. Make the club as successful as possible by convincing your friends and classmates to join. If your club gains recognition from the community and is featured in the local newspaper or on the local news, be sure to mention that on your college application, and include a clip if possible.
