It's time for yet another installment of This Day in Sports. It seems like it was just yesterday that we began this journey. Today's version of Today in Sports will include scandals, Wayne Gretzky, an African American milestone by a Robinson not named Jackie and my favorite NHL team, the San Jose Sharks. These are the greatest moments in sports history for the day of October 9th.

This Day in Sports: October 9th, 1919
On October 9th, 1919 the Cincinnati Red defeated the Chicago White Sox in the final game of the World Series. What is so memorable about that? October 9th, 1919 was the day that the Chicago White Sox left their white socks behind and instead donned the evil black socks. Eight of the Chicago White Sox were charged with throwing the final game of the World Series.

This Day in Sports: October 9th, 1975
On October 9th, 1975 the Cleveland Indians decided to make Frank Robinson a player/manager. Frank Robinson was the first African American to ever coach a Major League Baseball team. In Cleveland Frank Robinson had a record slightly under .500 at 186 - 189. Robinson would go on to manage San Francisco, Baltimore, Montreal and Washington and has a career record of 1065 - 1176. In 1989 Frank Robinson won his only Manager of the Year Award when he led the Baltimore Orioles to a record of 87 - 75.

This Day in Sports: October 9th, 1991
On October 9th, 1991 the San Jose Sharks played the third game of their franchise's history. However, on this night they recorded their franchise's first win. The game was a 4 - 3 win over the Calgary Flames. The Sharks finished their first season with a 17 - 58 - 5 record and went 11 - 71 - 2 the following year but they have improved greatly since then.

This Day in Sports: October 9th, 2002
On October 9th, 2002 the L. A. Kings did probably the most inevitable thing in sports history. They retired Wayne Gretzky's number #99. Heck, Wayne Gretzky was so good they probably should have retired all 9's from every number in the NHL.
