There used to be a time when the only spying that you had to worry about was your nosy next door neighbor peering over the fence or some private detective if you were suspected of cheating on your wife. There was also the national obsession about spying when the cold war was going on, but that was about it. If you minded your own business and didn't cheat, or get involved with the CIA, you pretty much had nothing to be concerned about.

But with the new age of technology that began with the Internet revolution in the eighties, things began to change. It seemed that information became a viable commodity at that point and a lot of the ethics surrounding it went right out of the window. One of the things that made it easy is that computers remember everything. George down at the grocery store may remember that you're particularly fond of bourbon and peanut butter, but now that the store has a computer, it can break down all of your purchases and figure out the best way to sell to you. Credit card companies can track your purchases and what you buy can affect your credit rating. It's called profiling. Even if you file bankruptcy, be prepared to get all kinds of credit offers in the mail shortly thereafter. Google someone's name and you can get their address, phone number, and directions to their house. Write an email and what you're writing about trigger ads to appear on the page. It's even gotten to where satellites from space have the capability to peer in through your bedroom window if they wanted to.

And if you think that you're safe on your computer, don't. Pretty much everything that you do on it from emails to storing data is vulnerable to snooping and you may not even be aware of it. A friend of mine who is very knowledgeable about computers tell me that the definition of a good hacker is not the ones that go in and wreck havoc on your files and shut everything down, but rather those who can go in Trojan-like, snoop around and you'll never know that they were there.
