If you want to create your own lava lamp, there are a few materials that you will need to gather. Many of these items can be found around the house. You may have to purchase some of the items. All of the items can be purchased for next to nothing. Please refer to the following list:
Vegetable Oil
Food Coloring
Water
Alka-Seltzer Tablets
Any type of bottle from a soda bottle to a decorative bottle; the bottle must have a lid
*No light source is required for this particular project, but if you like, you may place the completed project in front of a light source, such as a nightlight or an adjustable desk lamp.
The following lists the steps to create your own lava lamp:
1) Once all of your materials are gathered, fill the bottle of your choice with approximately one cup of vegetable oil.
2) Once you have added the vegetable oil, fill the remaining of the bottle with water, but leave approximately one and a half to two inches space free at the top of the bottle
3) Add the food coloring to the bottle. You will want to add at least eight to ten drops of food coloring
4) Slowly add a half of an alka-seltzer tablet and wait for the bubbling to stop. Once this has happened, add the second half of the alka-seltzer tablet
5) Once all bubbling has ceased, put the lid or cap on the bottle
6) Once the lid or cap is on the bottle, you can then tilt the bottle slowly back and forth and watch the blobs appear
You have now created your very own lava lamp! Many people may choose to add a glitter mixture or some other effect to create a more personal style lava lamp. As stated previously, a light source is not required to create your own lava lamp using this guide. However, if you wish to have a light source, you may place the creation in front of a flashlight or other light source.
