As parents, we want our children to learn as much as possible. Sometimes, we are so caught up in teaching academics that we forget about the useful life skills that will be necessary for them to know once they move out on their own. Life skills not only assist in teaching children things that are necessary to know when they are on their own, but it also reinforces responsibility. One of the many life skills that children should be encouraged to do is participate in the doing the laundry. It is vital that children understand that it is their responsibility to participate in the many chores of the family. They should understand that they are expected to do their share in order for the family to function as a whole. If you are looking for advice on how to encourage children to do laundry, read on, as this article contains many helpful tips.

The first step to encouraging children to do laundry is to start them at a young age. Many younger children are often excited to be able to help with household chores. If you start children young, they are less likely to argue or get frustrated over having to participate in doing laundry. In addition to this, young children are much more receptive to learning new things. If you are to teach them to do laundry, you will want to them to do it properly. If they are receptive to your instructions, they will learn much more quickly. This is the time to teach how to separate clothing, what types of soaps and detergents to use for what products, what dryer sheets to use, and what settings should be used on drying certain types of clothing.

You will want to create an area in the home where clothes can be sorted and organized prior to washing. You will find that children who are young will work very hard to ensure that all the clothes are in the proper areas. For example, you may want to put some clothes baskets in the hall of your home (if it is large enough) and label with words or pictures what goes in each basket. You may place a picture of underwear above the appropriate baskets, a picture of a towel above that basket, and so on. If something is found to be out of place, a younger child will usually resolve this issue very quickly.

Such a great piece. I like the organizing of the laundry room just for myself. It is so important to teach domestic skills to children, otherwise they will have to move into the dry cleaners!

I agree with your advice, otherwise the kids will end up like my nephews, 23 and 26 respectively who still live at home with their Mom still doing their laundry. Gotta get them when they are young. Good article.
