Jet skis, boogie boards, all-night concerts, and a Mayan tour are just a handful of activities to enjoy as you spend the days on one of Mexico's most popular vacation destinations. If you're yearning for that Corona on Cancun's sandy shores this Spring Break, be sure to book your flight and hotel as early as possible. The tequila-soaked destination fills up yearly with thousands of college students and spring break enthusiasts, and rates swing up faster than the Mexican temperatures by the beginning of February. Hurricane Wilma's effects have made it harder to find a competitive rate, so the best strategy is to snag your spot in the Caribbean front as early as Christmas. Here are some other tips and suggestions to make sure your visit to the Yucatan is safe, enjoyable, and everything an escape to the Caribbean can be:
Don't drink the water. You've heard it once, and you'll hear it every time (unless you're the one saying it from a humbling experience). The water is not safe in the area, and so make sure you've got that Dasani in hand at all times.
Plan on walking or rent a scooter. Traffic is ridiculous during spring break season, and you won't get far with a rental car. Avoid parking hassles and choose to walk whenever possible. Buses are cheap too, and can get you downtown in just a few minutes.
Dig in to the fresh seafood. From seafood buffets to specialty menus at local restaurants, options abound for the premium catch of the day. Even if your resort is all-inclusive, don't forgo the chance to order from a specialty menu if you can; the difference is well worth it!
Try out a new water sport. From deep sea diving, snorkeling, cave exploring, or kayaking through an ancient forest, plan to complete at least one new activity and enjoy some of Cancun's gorgeous settings.
Pack a good novel. You'll definitely need some reading material on the long bus rides, a flight delay at the congested airport, or just to wind down after a day of touring. It's hard to find bookstores or magazine stands in the area, so taking along a couple of favorites is a good idea.
