Rotavirus is responsible for sending approximately 70,000 kids to American hospitals for treatment every year. It also is the cause of 160,000 trips to emergency rooms by kids who are under five years of age. And, Rotavirus is the reason for nearly 500,000 appointments at pediatricians' offices. About 100 American kids die from this contagious ailment annually. If you have young kids, or you know someone who does, then you'd better find out the answer to the questions "What Is Rotavirus and how do I protect my kids from it?"

Rotavirus isn't just one infectious bug. Rather, it's a collection of viruses that attacks a person's intestinal tract. The results are that the sufferer has bouts of diarrhea that can easily dehydrate them. There is also fever, nausea and vomiting, and maybe even painful abdominal cramps.

Once a kid becomes dehydrated, he or she can show further symptoms. These symptoms can include a dry, cottony mouth, listlessness, sunken eyes, limitless thirst and cool-feeling skin.

Rotavirus is a highly-contagious infection that can be contracted at anytime. However, the incidents of cases increase in the Fall in the southwestern portion of the United States. The viruses tend to extend into the northeastern areas by the time Spring arrives.

It's termed as a "fecal-to-mouth" infection since it's normally spread from not washing one's hands after using the restroom. It can also be spread by parents or others who care for young ones who touch infected fecal matter and don't wash their hands afterwards.

When the viruses get on solid moisture-free surfaces like countertops and tables, they can exist for several days.

To help protect your kids from contracting this illness, you should teach them to wash their hands with plenty of antibacterial soap after they use the restroom. They should also be taught to wash their hands well before they eat or drink anything.
