The term has been floating around recently and many moms are confused. What is an unassisted childbirth? Why is it called freebirth? Is it dangerous? Why would someone elect to have a UC (as it's often called)? Do they get prenatal care? What happens if something goes wrong?

All these questions and more will be answered in this article.

Unassisted childbirth is the act of having your baby without the presence of a doctor or midwife. Typically it's in your own home but some women birth in secluded areas like their back yard or a field, the woods, or somewhere else quiet and private.

Why would someone choose to have a UC?

There are several philosophies that a woman wanting a UC typically has. One is that childbirth is much like conception, in that the only people that should be there are the people who made the baby in the first place. The second is that childbirth is a completely natural process that every woman is prepared to handle. She has confidence in herself, her body, and her baby, and she feels that intervention is risky. Another is the very real fear that her birth will be hampered or even ruined by attendants, no matter how understanding they are of her wishes. Some women view birth as a spiritual or empowering experience and the presence of strangers...even if it's someone you've screened and hired, can adversely affect your birth, in their opinion.

Why is it called freebirth?

Because the woman births free of restrictions placed on her by others who can't tap into her instincts or birth her baby.

Is it dangerous?

There are no statistics kept on unassisted childbirth, as many of the women who have one consider it a private event and therefore they report to no authority on how the birth went, if there were any complications, etc. However, there are many stories of women having safe and wonderful UC births all over the internet.

Do they get prenatal care?

mothers may be safer delivering in a hospital. Their babies can have problems with their lungs and may suffer low blood sugar. Also, I would not recommend VBAC as an unassisted birth, though with careful monitoring and an experienced practitioner (and close proximity to the hospital) it might be possible to do it as a homebirth.

Not a bad article. A few points I would like to make, though: 1) Any mom having two or more babies needs to be in a hospital that has NICU capabilities and needs to have an obstetrician present for the birth. The complication rate is much higher with twins-we don't even do twin births in the rural hospital where I work. There is also a higher chance of the babies being premature. 2) Meconium in the waters is a definitive reason to transfer to a hospital. You need continuous monitoring for this. Meconium is an indicator that the baby has had an anoxic (lack of oxygen) event, and the baby can also aspirate meconium into the lungs which can cause breathing problems. Note, though, that meconium does NOT mean automatic C-section, it just means careful monitoring. 3) Preterm labour of ANY kind should NEVER be dealt with at home. If you think you are in labour and know you're not due, go to the hospital to get checked. 4) Depending on how good their blood sugar control is, diabetic

Loved your article. One thing though... most UP/UC families I know will avoid doppler because of the effects of ultrasound on the developing baby, (1 minute of doppler = 1/2 hour visual ultrasound) or the deafening (as much as 100 decibels) result of amplification through amniotic fluid. Fetoscope might be harder to hear with, but much safer.

That story is proof that being in the hospital doesn't guarantee a good outcome. Most people who attempt UC are not high risk patients and go to the hospital if treatment is required.

I'm all for homebirths but I find the idea of unassissted births to be very scary. I have 3 children and all were high risks pregnancies, I nearly died while pregnant with my last. When I had my first baby, the poor woman in the room next to me lost her baby because the babies umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck when he was delivered. The staff figured it out and attempted an emergency c-section but it was too late for that baby. No one saw it coming I can't imagine how many more babies will die from things that they could possibly live through if the mother was under a doctor or midwives care. I really liked your article though despite my opinions about the subject. I'm in process of writing an article about this subject now. Good job! I will be reading more of your work.

And uh, according to Jenny Lethbridge's page, she has six kids. Unless this is the fourth one in 3-4 years, I doubt she has ten. That the state follows her around removing her children without even investigating, within weeks of their birth, by the way, does not mean she's an unfit mother. If you think our CPS system is perfet you're ignorant.

Do you have any proof of your accusations? Probably not. Go harrass someone else.

Here's "What you should know" -- "Liz Copeland" is really Jennifer Lethbridge, who together with her husband Matt is one of the most spectacularly abusive and neglectful parents in the state of Michigan. When her latest child is spawned and taken away, it will be the TENTH child that she and her filthy husband have had removed from their care, and their rights as parents terminated. You should be forcibly sterilized. I hope every day of your life you look at pictures of the little baby Isaac who is DEAD because of you, i hope he haunts your dreams.
