New York Times Points to Heavy Hand of Alaska Governor's Office in Troopergate

Alaska Governor and Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin was the focus of a little more than Tina Fey's satire or David Brook's descriptive comments Friday, October 10. The

Alaska state legislature received the report of independent investigator Steve Branchflower, who was hired by the legislature to look into possible Palin abuses of office in what has become known as Troopergate.

The Palin Report is being downplayed by the John McCain campaign. Before its release, McCain staffers were quick to point out that the investigation had been "hijacked" by Democrats. They say that the Alaska legislature had taken a policy issue between a governor and a subordinate and attempted to make it look as if inappropriate behavior was involved.

But Democrats aren't the only people intent on finding the truth about the matter of the firing of Alaska state Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan, who claims that he was fired because he would not bow to the intimidation tactics of Governor Palin and her office to terminate the employment of State Trooper Mike Wooten. Alaska state Senate President Lyda Green, a Republican, who has had confrontations with Palin, states: "When you're the governor, you leave your household hat at home and you become governor."

The legislative council that voted for the investigation of Governor Palin was a bipartisan 12-member council and voted unanimously for the investigation.

The New York Times is reporting that the Palin Report reflects badly on the Alaska Governor. The Times maintains that Palin has not cooperated with the investigation as she promised. It has also been found that her various reasons for dismissing her Safety Commissioner are not bearing the weight of close scrutiny, either. Her claims that part of her reasoning was two unauthorized trips that Monegan took have been found to be untrue. The trips were authorized.

I always suspected that the vetting process for Sarah Palin was a farce. Still, it is sad to see John McCain tarnish his own reputation with this kind of poor judgement. The fact that she was being investigated should have been a red flag for McCain..

It is so SHAMEFUL for Sarah Palin, and so disappointing for REAL Conservatives like me, but then again, this is NOT the first time she has been disappointing, nor do I suspect it will be the last. OsiSpeaks.com

Just to clarify, 263-pages are in the public report but 1,000 more pages of documents will remain confidential, the council's chairman. At some media sites, it is being reported that she did violate the law so I'm not sure of the final determination as to the distinction between an ethics violation and breaking the law.

Saul - I believe the report has been released to the public now. Breaking news (just released) from CNN, around 9:30 pm when I saw it... notes that she did abuse her power and there is now a Public Report. Since this is breaking news, it is still a developing story. I just thought you might want to check out updates and see the report, which (for now) is public. Although the report concluded that she did abuse her power, I don't believe they found her guilty of violating the law. Again, the news is still developing. I was riveted by the info in your article.

McCain and Palin don't want to talk about real issues, because they have NO plan for the economy and NO plan to end this war in Iraq. I have a question for Sarah Palin, were you the director of a 527 political group organized by the now indicted Senator Ted Stevens of Alaska? How about answering the question, Mrs. Palin? Let's not forget that the Republicans won the election in 2000 by a 5 to 4 vote in Daddy Bushes' Supreme Court. Lets not forget that this election is about real issues like the economy, education, and health care, and not slime and repugnant political games that McCain and Palin are playing. VOTE FOR BARACK OBAMA AND LETS GET A DEMOCRAT WIN IN NOVEMBER!
