Normally I try to keep politics out of my writing, but tonight something absolutely remarkable happened. Not 2 hours ago, I was discussing at length with a friend of mine my upset at the nasty, angry remarks coming from supporters at McCain-Palin rallies. In recent weeks, supporters have been overheard shouting "Terrorist," "Treason," and "Kill Him."

Why, I wondered aloud, had no one stopped a speech to say, "Enough"? Certainly, the campaign had said it wasn't condoned, but that did not stop some supporters from harassing an African Amercan reporter at a rally. I turned to my friend and said, "Really, one of them should say something. Palin or McCain should tell people that regardless of what side you're on and how you feel about someone, or what you agree with. These angry, threatening words are not acceptable.

When I arrived home, what came up on the news for John McCain, thankfully saying exactly that. In fact he actually had to defend Barrack Obama. And when he did he was booed by his own supporters. That's right, booed by his own supporters. Are people so desperate to feel good about their choice of candidate, that they can no longer hear them? When they do hear the words, how well to they register? Well here is an example for you to consider.

One woman took the microphone to ask a question only to say that she did not trust Barack Obama because he was "an Arab". McCain took the microphone from this woman and said "no ma'am, no ma'am, no." "No?" the woman questioned "no ma'am" he repeated. He described Obama as "a descent family man" and told people not to fear Obama.

Threatening the candidate is not acceptable. Threatening the reporters covering the candidate is not acceptable. For the next 25 days regardless of who wins John McCain, or Barack Obama, we must stop making this a campaign of fear, anger or race. Too many things are happening -- important things. And two decent men, with different ideas are running for President, and we must choose our next leader. This is more than a talk show style slugfest. It's about time someone said so.

This is fantastic Geannie ... definitely worth breaking your no politics rule. This article definitely presented something that needed to be said and in a very tasteful manner! Way to go friend!

I think that there is so much mud being thrown on each side of this campaign. It's nice to see McCain stand up and show respect for Obama.

Great recap on what McCain is doing.

Geez, you'd think it would be those cretin democrats that would be screaming things like "Kill him." See, I've seen the nastiness and evil in the republican party ever since they embarrassed the entire country before the world by taking an indiscreet, immature gir's confessions to a jealous, fat middle-aged coyote and revving it up to an impeachment trial. And then there was the Swiftboating of Kerry. And let's not forget the rumors about Hillary's sexuality. Yes, the repubs have been the nasty ones all along. People were just too stupid to see it!

Thank you so much for this. The sheer rage with which his statement was met is scary.

Great reporting!

Glad to hear McCain is finally doign something about these inappropriate remarks. If only Palin would do the same.

Good article - glad he's finally standing up and telling people not to be so racist.

Well put; thank you Geanie.

Excellent job on this. I am sure Palin's attacks on Obama calling him a 'terrorist" on a daily basis doesn't help either.

Nice article. I don't 'do' politics here, either.

If you caught this in its first 15 or so minutes, thee was a small error in the opening. I was trying out a new text-to-speech to spare my one good hand, and the transcription flubbed up. No more late night publishing for me. Thanks to those who caught it. And yes, I broke my own "No politics rule, because I felt the message was important.

I saw part of this on TV and I was pretty shocked at the responses he got. Great article!
