McCain Defends Obama Against His Own Supporters
In recent days, John McCain and Sarah Palin have had to turn up the rhetoric against Barack Obama as they fall behind in the polls. Since last Saturday, attacks on William Ayers ties to Obama and on Obama's inexperience have been the norm in McCain and Palin rallies. Additional news was also made by McCain and Palin supporters, who were caught on tape saying frightening things about Obama. McCain received criticism for not responding to those angry supporters, but he tried to make up for it in a rally yesterday.
In recent days, a few McCain supporters have yelled out "terrorist" to describe Obama and one even used the phrase "kill him" in one rally. Even a recent senate debate in Georgia had a woman shouting "bomb Obama" in the background, according to MSNBC's Countdown.
In a town hall meeting with supporters in Minnesota yesterday, McCain actually talked to some of these more hysterical fans, which he didn't do during rallies this past week. It all started when McCain talked to a man who said that he would be scared to bring up a child in an Obama administration.
Though this attack was not as inflammatory as the previous ones made by McCain fans, McCain was far quicker to respond. He rebuked the comment by saying that Obama was "a decent person and a person that you do not have to be scared of as President of the United States," according to FOX News.
For this defense, many supporters in the rally gave a string of boos.
A female supporter later asked McCain a question while also saying that Obama was an Arab, a common attack against Obama as he is suspected of being a "secret Muslim." McCain had to grab the microphone from the woman and defend Obama again, saying he is a "decent family man" and not a Muslim.
Other McCain fans urged him to say the facts about Obama and to go to "the mattress" with him in the final Presidential debate next week.
