At the Barktober-Fest in Plymouth, MA

The waterfront in Plymouth, Massachusetts is beautiful especially on a crisp October day. On October 18, 2008 something special is happening on the waterfront - a Barktober-Fest.

What is a Barktober-Fest you ask? It is the first time that the Plymouth Area Chamber of Commerce will be turning the waterfront into a dog park. I sure hope they have some good cleaner uppers for those who refuse to use bags (please do). I ask you to but it is

actually (as it should be) a rule.

This will happen on Saturday between 11:00a.m. and 4:00p.m. I'm sure the event will draw a crowd. Plymouth is a destination for non residents because it is America's Home Town (Plymouth Rock is here.) and has a cute Main Street.

Plymouth is about 50 miles south of Boston on the way to Cape Cod. You'll be taking route 3 south. Get off at exit 6 and head to Plymouth not Carver. Head to the water; there is plenty of parking around town.

Kathryn Koch in an article I have published in the Old Colony newspaper called "A dog's day" writes, "Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Denis Hanks said he expects the event to be a very popular one."Hundreds of people walk around Plymouth with their dogs, so we expect a great turnout, weather permitting," he said. "Everybody's excited about it."

What will be going on? Some of the many events include:

The Plymouth County Sheriff's Department will offer a demonstration at 11:00a.m. of their K-9 unit. This is the unit that sniffs your luggage at the airport.

At 11:30 you can adopt a pet. The Friends of the Plymouth Pound will parade the dogs available for adoption. They will be hard to pass by, for sure.

At 12:00p.m. dress up your pet for a dog costume contest. You can see a picture of what my dog will look like. Can you guess what she is?

Is Fido obstinate? Take him to the obedience training session at 2:00p.m. Good luck!

At 3:00 the winner of the photo contest will be announced. I'm sure my dog will win so don't even bother entering!

There will be exhibits such as a pet photographer, services of a vet and dog washing. kids will be selling hamburgers and hot dogs thanks to the Rotary Club.
