Okay, so if you've never heard this phrase before, I will enlighten you. The Fourth Estate is the name given Media as the watchdog over the power of government and the abuses that naturally result form power.

Media is supposed to be neutral, serving all of us equally. Their job is to REPORT the news, not make the news. Their job is to provide only the facts and whatever background info necessary to make a news item understood in proper context.

But what has media evolved into, especially in the last 8 years? A partisan entity that no longer even attempts to hide behind Journalism. I mean, c'mon here folks! Chris Matthews of MSNBC's Hardball once stated when he heard Obama speak he got a chill running up his leg. I wonder if he's confusing a "chill up his leg" with a chubb for his boy? And didn't Keith Olberman of that same MSNBC recently call McCain "despicable?" Neither of those paraphrases sounds neutral to me.

These folks in media have crossed the line from observation and reporting to full on advocacy. Even Saturday Night Live has taken to lampooning the media and their chubb for their Messiah. The season premiere this year had Kristen Wiig playing Campbell Brown stating "The media is totally in the tank for Obama." (paraphrase) And 2 weeks ago SNL did a skit lampooning Pelosi, Barney Frank, Chris Dodd and even George Soros himself about the sub-prime fiasco, but Soros complained, and as the owner of the Democrat Party as Soros himself claims, he had SNL remove the "offending" portions of the skit from their YouTube videos.

Media have done all they can to abuse the public's trust. They have unabashedly advocated for Obama and the Democrats. They make no apologies for their actions and in fact continue to pile on more and more evidence that indeed they are in the tank for Obama. They're taking a dump in their palms, and acting like the chimps they are, they are tossing their feces at us, right into our faces, all the while daring us to do something about it.

I can only wonder when journalists decided their job wasn't to inform, but rather to influence? I wanted to be one when I was in the Navy, but am glad I just decided to be a plain ol' writer instead! Keep on keepin' on, brother!

Yes referring to Edwards. And yes, everyone I know in the media is liberal. who else would put up with the low starting salaries?

Are you referring to John Edwards here Lip?

Alas I agree that journalism is dead, due to Bush denying them access and the big papers balking at covering enough real news. How is it possible that a major candidate for president was photographed on his campaign plane with the woman he was having an affair and it didn't immediately hit the new? The best book on this topic is by Helen Thomas: "Watchdogs of Democracy?"

Furthermore Lip, do I take your comment to mean that you disagree that Journalism is dead? I would love to hear your take on the overall issue.

Thanks for the advice Lip, but I am not a journalist - never claimed to be either. And my nom de plume is a joke. Anyone who has been on AC for more than a few months knows my name is Jim Clayton, and I live in Richmond, VA. I used my real name for the first year i wrote here. Snidely Whiplash is a joke about how the Lefties are always calling Conservatives evil, so I adopted the most ridiculous cartoon character name I could to represent the cartoonish portrayal Libs always put forth about Conservatives. So do I take it your comment implies that if one isn't a journalist they can't write about journalism? I ain't a rocket scientist either, but when I see one blow up on liftoff I don't read a rocket scientist to explain that something is F'ed up, now do I? Disagreement aside, I appreciate your bothering to read and comment on my article. Thanks Lip!

So start a newspaper. But you will have to use your real name there. Real journalists do write under a real name

I'm sincerely convinced that the media helped to cause the economic downturn in order to get a Democrat elected. I may have written this to yuo beofre, but it bears repeating - last Sept (07) they started saying it was going to be a horrible Christmas season. They jumped on the falling housing economy and rising unemployment like white on rice. Funny - everything got worse after they started hawking it. The word "report" must now be taken with a grain of salt.

It's true the media is supposed to be neutral...I wonder why it changed :( Great article.

Excellent article! Objective folks are aware of the bias. It is clear and loud. I would like saul relative to list those right-wing media outlets. Bush's "run-up" to the war in Iraq was supported by mainstream liberals.

Thanks Amanda, and Saul, I appreciate your point, but even most ardent of Lefties will usually admit there is a damn strong Left bias. I'm not just talking CNN here neither. Add in the 3 broadcast networks, PBS, NPR, and most print media is left biased - NY Times, Wash Post, Chi. Sun-Times (or the Trib, I can't remember which) LA Times, SF Chronicle, etc. Newsweek, Time, et al. so but for Rush, Hannity & Beck on the radio dial & FOX in cable news, it's pretty much a lock that the rest of media is rather strongly left biased. And what about the Fairness Doctrine? I honestly cannot imagine any news outlet arguing for the hushing of any point of view, as what goes around comes around, no? I thought only Tass and Pravda wanted to quiet any point of view but for their own.

I worked both in network news and print. My own uncle was a political reporter in New Jersey for over 40 years. He himself is a Democrat but says the slant of journalism in the last decade is undeniable. A free press is a notion of a bygone era. The left wants no discourse. They simply want to claim their way or the highway. The silent masses who keep to themselves have awakened. Keep up the good work Jim. The call has been issued. People are listening.

Interesting debate, but I find the left-wing liberal media conspiracy theory just as ridiculous as the right-wing media conspiracy theory. I think there are merits to both arguments and you make a few good points, but there is evidence that there are just as many right-wing organizations and media outlets as there are left-wing. Just take a look at the internet. Journalism isn't doing it's job holding politicians and corporations accountable is apparent by their lack of doing or saying nearly nothing contrary to Bush in the run-up to the war in Iraq. The Fourth Estate's unwritten mission of watchdog is being neglected on both sides of the political fence, feeding the b.s. of particular ideologies instead of investigating, reporting, dissecting, analyzing, and editorializing in the name of impartial service to their readers and viewers -- all of them. Provocative article, Jim, as always. Write on, my friend...
