If you work in an office or are in front of a computer screen for at least five hours a day, you may develop carpal tunnel syndrome over time. This can occur when too much strain is put on the wrist muscles, which causes them to tear. This can be a very painful problem and after a while will require surgery to correct the problem. Also, those who have carpal tunnel syndrome are prime candidates for arthritis later in life. But there are ways to avoid carpal tunnel and still get all of your work done during they day.

One of the best ways to avoid carpal tunnel is to create a workstation that is functioning and comfortable. In most offices, you will be given a padded chair, floor pad, and a desk that is the right height. Unfortunately, not all offices and other workplaces will furnish their employees with these items. If you work from home, you may not have considered the importance of these items either. The fact is that having a comfortable adjustable chair, plastic floor mats, and an ergonomic keyboard will help reduce the strain you are putting on your wrist muscles and also the muscles in your back, legs, and thighs.

You can purchase this equipment at any office supply store or online. While some of the equipment will be more expensive than others, it is worth the investment because carpal tunnel surgery can be very expensive and painful later on. If you cannot afford to buy all of these pieces, start with an ergonomic keyboard as these will not cost you more than forty dollars and will help immediately with the alignment of your wrists and arms.

Other ways you can reduce wrist strain is to take breaks every two hours or so if you plan on being at your computer for most of the day. Take a quick walk or stretch for five minutes in order to loosen up your muscles. Simple wrist exercises are very useful if working in an office environment. Drink plenty of water throughout the day because water will keep the muscles limber.
