October 12th might be the most jam packed day in my This Day in Sports series. There is a lot to get to so we'll get right to it.

October 12th, 1853
October 12th, 1853 was the date of a boxing match that will be remembered by all...well not anymore since everybody that saw it is probably no longer alive. John Morrissey boxed Yankee Sullivan. Sullivan was seemingly going to win during the first ten rounds but wore down as the fight went on. The match eventually went to 38 rounds before Sullivan got into a fight with Morrissey's second. Morrissey was awarded the victory for not get involved in the brawl.

October 12th, 1907
Three Finger Brown threw a 2 - 0 shutout against the Detroit Tigers. The Chicago Cubs were the World Champions and they were the first team to ever sweep a World Series. You read that right, Chicago Cubs were World Champions.

October 12th, 1968
The 19th Olympic games open in Mexico City, Mexico.

October 12th, 1982
In Game 1 of the 1982 World Series Paul Molitor goes 5 for 6 against the Cardinals. Paul Molitor is the first player to get five hits in a World Series game.

October 12th, 1986
The California Angels are one strike away from going to the World Series when Dave Henderson hits a two-run home run. The Angels would tie the game in the bottom of the ninth but the Red Sox would win in 11 innings on a sacrifice fly by Henderson.

October 12th, 1986
On October 12th, 1985 Walter Payton became the first player in NFL history to accumulate 20,000 total yards.

October 12th, 1989
On October 12th, 1989 the Dallas Cowboys dynasty was born. The Dallas Cowboys would trade Herschel Walker to the Minnesota Vikings for 13 players and draft picks. One draft pick would be traded for another draft pick and was used to draft Emmitt Smith. Another draft pick was Darren Woodson and another draft pick would be traded for another draft pick that led to Russell Maryland.

October 12th, 1991
Before Doug Flutie was playing quarterback in Buffalo and selling cereal he was a star of the BC Lions in the CFL. On October 12th, 1991 Flutie broke a CFL passing record by throwing for 582 yards in one game.
