Many couples wait a long time to find out that they are going to have a baby. And even those for whom pregnancy comes easily, it may not be the joyous event that they expect. When your doctor tells you that there is some problem, and that you have a high-risk pregnancy, your happiness may vanish and fear and doubt will come in.

Having a high-risk pregnancy is extremely stressful. However, that stress will only make the risk greater, and the stress on your baby, and your own body, that much worse. There are some excellent ways to help relieve the stress of a high-risk pregnancy.

Voice Your Feelings

Perhaps the best thing to do in any high stress situation is to voice your feelings and fears to people. Bottling up stress only increases it, and its effects on your health. Talking to your husband, mother, or other family member, or to a close friend will help you relieve the stress. If you must, explain to them that you don't expect them to solve the problem, but you just need to vent your fears.

You should also be able to voice your concerns to your doctor. Many doctors these days are very busy and may not want to dedicate all the time you want them to. Remember that you are in charge of your care, and you should be able to discuss any medical fears with them.

Do Not Read Baby Books

There are many baby and pregnancy books on the market about what you should expect when you are pregnant. If you have a difficult or high-risk pregnancy, it is a good idea to NOT read these. While the book may tell you that you will feel such a way, you may be feeling much worse. Reading the positive aspects of a 'normal' pregnancy may just cause depression or more stress in your high-risk pregnancy.

Feel Free to Tell Others To Be Quiet

When you are pregnant, many women seem to feel free to share their experiences or offer advice - even complete strangers. Every pregnancy is completely different, and having a high-risk pregnancy only compounds that. What might be good advice for one might be detrimental to a high-risk pregnancy.
