NBC debuted its late-breaking action adventure series "My Own Worst Enemy" Monday, October 13 at 10 p.m. Starring Christian Slater, "My Own Worst Enemy," chronicles the life of Henry, a middle-aged suburban dad just trying to pay the bills, and Edward, a government operative whose forte is killing people. "Life" is correct in this instance because Edward and Henry are the same man.

Christian Slater is just the man for the part. He has that smart-aleck charisma about him that can also be sort of nerdy at the same time. Perfect for this job - or jobs, as the case seems to be. But, truthfully, Slater's character does not really have multiple personalities - the true term for the mental condition is disassociative identity disorder - because Edward/Henry is a government experiment. His second personality is manufactured, not from within, but from without, induced by government scientists.

Slater told TVGuide.com that the script attracted him to the show. When asked which of the two characters he most identified with, Slater said it was a little of both. "I thought the title was great fun, and that the Jekyll-and-Hyde premise, that angel-and-devil-on-your-shoulder theme, was something very identifiable and interesting."

Christian Slater Began His Career On Television

"My Own Worst Enemy" is Slater's first long-term foray into television. He guested on an episode of "My Name Is Earl" in 2006. Slater has been acting since he was 10 years old, working on the ABC soap opera "One Life To Live," then moving on to Broadway. He made his big screen debut in the hit "The Legend Of Billie Jean," which may be remembered more for the Pat Benatar theme song than the actual movie itself. Slater has a long string of hit movies to his credit: "Pump Up The Volume," "Bed of Roses," "Interview With A Vampire," "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves," "Young Guns II," "True Romance," "Murder In The First," and "Broken Arrow."

I was intrigued by the previews for this show but you bring up an excellent point: what credible reason could exist for such a program? I wonder if viewers will buy the premise. Although I'm not a huge fan of Slater (think media comparisons of his voice and mannerisms being too much like Jack Nicholson are apt), I've noticed some of his career ups and downs. I'll never get the title "Celebrities who Bite" out of my mind, after seeing Slater featured in that article, along with others who gave in to anger and...bit other people. Yeek!

I'm not a Slater fan so I doubt I will watch this one. However, I really appreciated learning more about him and the show from you. Great job!
