The State Quarter series has been a huge success in the history of the United States Mint. People absolutely love these coins and from the casual collector with their State Quarter map to the serious collector, these coins have certainly got a foothold on the collecting community. For ten years, five new coins have been minted and distributed. What does 2007 hold for these great coins?The 50 States Commemorative Coin Program Act provided for designs to be submitted and an approval process developed by Treasury Secretary. The importance of the nation's coinage and currency to have a dignified designs where the citizens of the United States would be proud, the Act also required that the Secretary shall not select any frivolous or inappropriate designs. Also included in the restriction were that no head-and-shoulders portrait or bust of any person, living or dead, and no portrait of a living person could be included in the design.
For 2007, five more quarters will be rolling out for us. Let's take a look at what we can look forward to:
1. Montana will be released in January. The reverse will feature the date of Montana's statehood which will be placed above an iconic bison skull which will be situated in the upper center of the coin. Below the skull, there will be a landscape of mountains, plains and a river. The inscription "Big Sky Country" will appear to the right of the bison skull. Montana became a state on November 8, 1889.
2. Washington will be released in April. In the foreground, a king salmon jumps out of the water into the air. Mount Ranier and a wooded shoreline will be featured in the background. 1889, the year Washington became a State is at the top under "Washington" and to the right of the salmon is the wording "The Evergreen State" will also appear. Washington entered Statehood on November 11, 1889.
