There was a time not very long ago when your only option for renting movies was the local video store. Now, there are multiple chain video stores like Blockbuster and Hollywood Video. Recently Internet movie rental companies like Netflix have come on the scene- and they bring some major changes to the whole idea of renting movies. While Blockbuster, a major video rental location, no longer charges late fees for up to 30 days many traditional video rental stores still do. Netflix never charges you a let fee, even over 30 days, for as long as you are a member. At video rental stores you will usually pay by the movie, although plans are available. At Netflix you choose your plan, and they have plans starting at $3.99. Each plan gives you different rental options. At traditional video rental stores you have to go there to pick up your movie and go there to return it. At Netflix you make a list of the movies you want to watch, and you can update it it at any time. Each movie is sent to you through the mail, and you can ship it back when you are done free of charge. While many traditional video stores still offer VHS tapes Netflix deals exclusively with DVD's. Another popular option for movie rental is a sort of DVD vending machine, called Redbox. Redbox's are in locations like McDonald's and Shop N'Save nationwide. Redbox mostly carries new releases, and usually mostly child-friendly movies. Traditional video stores, Netflix, and Redbox are all great options for movie rental- but which one is right for you?

Option #1: The Traditional Video Rental Store (Like Blockbuster)
Price: Usually you will pay for your movie by each one that you rent. Prices vary from $3 to $4 depending on which video rental store you are using and what area of the country you are in. Many video rental stores also offer plans where you can rent unlimited movies per month at a set-fee.

Convenience: You have to go to the video store to pick out your movie and you have to go there to pick it up, but you can have your movie any time you want it with no waiting time involved.

Takeaways
  • Many video stores, like Blockbuster, offer a selection of both DVDs and VHS tapes.
  • Netflix is cost effective if you rent many movies per month and don't mind waiting to get them in the mail.
  • Redbox is great if you have a location near you and plan on only keeping your movie for one or two nights.

Good article. We use Netflix and love it! Best decision we ever made. We were always paying a lot of money in late fees before Netflix, lol.
