My family recently bought a new laptop for our 4-H groups tech team, okay it's not ours but we were responsible for seeing the groups money well spent. And my wife was the one who got the grants to get it so it was our job to get a good laptop and get the things they need for one. They want one for things like web site design, presentations and a Lego Robotics program.

We shopped around and one newer laptop company called Averatec caught our eye. They have been making laptops for a couple of years now and are doing pretty well at it. The company has no big complaints against them and no law suits pending that I could find. That is one thing I want to look at when I think about spending this kind of money on a new companies computer. Will the company be around in a year when I need to get support from them.

We needed a very basic laptop for the Lego program but wanted a pretty good processor and a decent size drive for the other things like Powerpoint or presentations and Frontpage or web design. We were looking at something that was less than a thousand and preferably less than eight hundred, my wife had raised eight hundred dollars so far and we would have liked to get a laptop for that. All the new laptops we could find were around a thousand but we kept going back to one store we have dealt with before and we got them to offer us a deal on this one. We had not heard about Averatec but the sales girl said it was a good company and asked the store owner about a deal as it would be going to a good organization, 4-H. They offered us $750 for the laptop and we took it and ran. Okay we didn't run out of the store but we did need to get the money from the account and I wanted to check on the company some.

Takeaways
  • Averatec is a new company with some good models of laptops.
  • The design is nice with easy access to the things you need.
  • I like the light weight and wireless features of the 3250 laptop.
Did You Know?
One of the first portable computers was the Osborne 1, a 24 pound laptop? with two floppy drives.

Averatec computers are pretty hit or miss... I bought my 3250 brand new, took it home and had a problem right out of the box. Averatec tech support told me to go back to the store and get a new unit. I did, and had problems with that unit within a few months... I've had to send it in to Averatec once so far and things aren't looking good for another trip...

I purchased an Averatec 3250 in may of 2006 and within 2 months or so I had trouble with the power cord socket. I would have to jimmy with the connection to get power to the unit. Eventually around October of 2006 it became almost impossible to get power to the unit. About the same time I began to notice smoke coming out of the back of the unit around the CPU vent location. I contacted Averatec and they said that I could send in the unit at my own expense and they would decide if they would fix it under the warranty. I did, and they did fix the power port problem. I assume they fixed the burning because it's not doing it anymore. I do have to say that their quality is pretty iffy, but I paid only $450 for mine on closeout so I can't complain too much... I did by the extended warranty from the store I purchased it at so I just need it to last another 6 months then I can take it back to the store under their extended warranty (they no longer carry averatec) and they've told me the

Approx a year after I bought my Averatec, the hard drive failed. Replacing it did no good since Averatec doesn't include recovery disks with the computers. After a couple of months I managed to find a copyof windows to install, only to find out that the wireless is no longer being recognized by the computer. Oh, and I forgot to mention it earlier, the battery completely died after 3 months, turning this into a tiny, slow desktop. Averatec makes a horrible product, and I will never buy from them again.

Please read below. I have been trying to get my Averatec laptop to work since I bought on May 5, and I have had nothing but trouble since then. I tried calling Averatec and all they would say was to send it to have it repaired. Then the repair shop is having trouble fixing it after I paid them half of what the computer cost. This is unbelievable. And it appears that I can't do anything about it. Tech Mgr, You just don't know how deeply disappointed I am with this service. When was someone going to call or e-mail me of this PROBLEM. What good will it do to return my transaction when what I need is the computer. First, the original motherboard fails less than 3 months after purchase, and then the BRAND NEW motherboard I am paying for fails the final test???? What kind of products do you have there. I know I sound frustrated but this computer has not worked properly since I bought on MAY 5. It is just not fair and if it was you on this end you might see things differently. How can

I bought an Averatec 3280 in April of 2005, and by June of 2006, it no longer worked at all. I had to have the hard drive and the system board replaced. Averatec has refused to send me a recovery CD, so I have no operating system or software. I'll never buy Averatec again.
