What Do Scientologists Believe?

Over the past couple of years, many of us have noticed the self-righteous and sometimes completely erratic behavior of one of the world's most mediocre movie stars: Tom Cruise. It's been known for a long time that Tom is a Scientologist, but what exactly does that mean? Is
Scientology another name for Christian Scientists? Are Scientologist's even Christians? What do they believe? Is it a cult? Who the hell is Xenu?

These are all questions I had and I found that when I went online to research the basic principles of Scientology, it was quite difficult. (It has since gotten much easier to find information perhaps due to generated interested by Tom's recent tirades, plus the development of resources such as Wikipedia.) Every attempt to get to their core beliefs was thwarted by an attempt to sell me Dianetics by L. Ron Hubbard, Scientology's founder. This is the book that started it all and lays the groundwork for what would become Scientology. Originally, published in 1950, it was basically a self-improvement book that described the human mind as being tainted with what Hubbard calls "engrams," a term for traumatic experiences that have accumulated within the psyche that inhibit a person from reaching his or her full potential. These engrams can be "cleared" with the help of an auditor. The auditor basically asks questions and listens to the "pre-clear" (the patient) while hooked up to an e-meter. This device works much like a polygraph, measuring electrical currents through the body. It is said that when an auditor asks the pre-clear a question, the machine can read mental disturbances. From there, the auditor can assess specific memories and problems the pre-clear is having and, supposedly, "clear" them.

If you let a science fiction writer write your bible, then that is exactly what you will get. Science Fiction!

I've heard that many Scientologists don't necessarily believe all the crazy mythology, but it's such a secretive organization, so it's hard to say for sure the church's official stance on this creation myth.

Oh Brother...Thank God for free will. My will is to be God's child, and I have the hope for eternal life. There has to be more than 80 years on this earth. I only looked at this as my daughter is getting interested in it. I think it's because most people involved in it are wealthy. My daughter is fairly well off and she loves the prestige it gives off. However, she has no clue about it. I ask her questions and she can't answer; in fact, she doesn't even know the founder's name. She thinks they are very genuine people. I'm sure they are, but what am I? Chopped liver?

Did you ever stop and think how insane this all is? Does anyone have any proof? No. This can be said of all Religions. People kill in the name of their religions. Scientology might be the craziest of them all! I don't know what to believe. It's all INSANE!

Too bad scientologists don't advertise their faith as casually as christians do... wouldn't it be great if there were a bunch of bumper stickers and stuff that said crap like, "Your engram's all up in my thetan!" Or "I'm from Teegeeack" or "Xenu is my homeboy"

cont.... The way they attack critis and goverments who only want them to act like the church they claim to be. Good piece Clinton and hats off to you for listing the scientology site also. People need to see both sides. Funny how scientology members will come here and post their sites but never a critic site like xenutv.com. Well more telling than funny.

I have no problem with them believing in whatever brings them peace. People have believed stranger things over the years. Its the ACTIONS of scientology I tend to speak out about. The tone scale, the websites created only to hurt people how dare to speak out against them. The fact they don't tell you up front about the total costs. The fact that they will destory the mental health field if they get the chance.........

Samantha, I read your article too and thought it was also good. The greatest threat to scientology now is that which they can't control: The spread of information via the internet. The more people that are informed, the less that can be hurt. By the way, you may also want to look into some of the scn front groups like CCHR and Narconon. Just as scary.
