According to a commercial, "sometimes a job is a job and sometimes a job is a career."

Are you interested in a job or a career?

Many people just want a job. Just some work to do so that they can earn money. They just do their job. They are not necessarily interested in pursuing a career. They find a job that they can do reasonably well. They earn money. Maybe a job as a wordprocessor. Or making a job working in a candy factory. They just do their work. They might or might not like the job. It's a job and they know that many people are unemployed so they are grateful to have the job. This is a job.

A career usually is for those who are ambitious types and they want more than a job. They want something that they like doing, and they want to have some type of autonomy in the work. They have aspirations. Maybe their ambition is to become supervisor or vice president or even president of the company. They think of their job as a career. Maybe they have attended a college or a trade school to learn this career. And it's the type of job that people associate with career, usually not a working class type job, but a professional class type job that people consider not a job but a career. Maybe it's a career in marketing and advertising, in teaching, in being the supervisor at a candy manufactoring company. Most of these professional type jobs people think of as careers.

Takeaways
  • Get a job.
  • Have a career.
  • Be your own boss.
