Simple Ways to Cut Grocery Costs

With the failing economy saving money is on the minds of many Americans. One of the biggest expenses many Americans are faced with is grocery costs. In all reality, it does not take much to reduce the cost of your groceries. Here are a few ways you can help to cut
the cost of your grocery bill.

Make a Grocery List

Making a grocery list is a simple thing that will help you to save money when you go grocery shopping. Make your list and only include what items you have to have. Stick to your list, and buy only what you have on your list.

Make As Few Trips to the Store as Possible

I try to grocery shop once a month. Obviously I do have to go to the store for small staples such as milk, and eggs which you can not buy a lot of at one time. By reducing the amount of times I go to the store I cut out the amount of impulse items that I buy.

Plan Your Meals

This may seem like it would not make a big difference, but it will. By planning your meals for the week you can make a grocery list of only the items you will need.

When you are planning your meals try to plan meals where you can use leftovers another night later on in the week. For example on Sunday you can roast a turkey, since you will not eat all of the meat on Sunday you can slice some of the meat for sandwiches during the week, and say on Tuesday night you can have turkey pot pie.

Another way to save is to plan budget meals, which are meals that don't cost much, such as breakfast for dinner.

Avoid Pre-Packaged Snack Foods

I have four kids so we have to have snack foods in the house. One of the ways I have found to cut back on the cost of snack foods is to avoid the pre-packaged snack foods such as cookies, pudding cups, and individually wrapped cakes.

What I do is I now make a cake which they can eat instead of the Little Debbie Cakes. I make a big batch of cookies where they can eat on them during the week, and I buy boxes of pudding which I mix up instead of buying the pudding cups. It may not seem like a lot of savings but it does add up over time.
