USB Flash Drives. What are they? Are they some sort of flash that works with a digital camera or camcorder? I am embarrassed to say that it wasn't until recently that I discovered these useful, handy little devices.A friend of mine was working on a school paper and wanted me to help her with editing the content. She came over to my home office where she proceeded to take out this little device that was no larger than my index finger. I asked her what this device was and she went on to tell me that it contains all of her school papers and as a matter of fact she was going to transfer the paper she wanted me to edit directly to my laptop. As she inserted the device into my laptop, I stood there in amazement as to how far technology has come over the years. After she inserted the USB drive, she opened her document and there it was, live and in living color, her paper! Once I completed proofreading and editing her paper I emailed it to her and asked her where I could pick up one of these handy little gems. She went on to tell me that I could get a flash drive on line or from any local retailer such as Wal-Mart or Target for as little as $15-30.00, depending on how much memory I required. I was intrigued and had to do my own research prior to purchasing one of these devices.
The first thing I wanted to know was the answer to the question; what is a USB Flash Drive? I came across a definition from the internet that I'd like to share with those of you like me, that are technologically challenged.
A USB device is a small, portableflash memory card that plugs into a computer's USBport and functions as a portable hard drive. USB flash drives are touted as being easy-to-use as they are small enough to be carried in a pocket and can plug into any computer with a USB drive. USB flash drives have less storage capacity than an external hard drive, but they are smaller and more durable because they do not contain any internal moving parts.
USB flash drives also are called thumb drives, jump drives, pen drives, key drives, tokens, or simply USB drives.
