After the first fifteen minutes of Wednesday's debate, I have to admit that I was pretty irritated. I almost turned it off--just more of the same. I was getting ready to write an angry rant about how outrageous it was that these candidates cranked out their exact same rhetoric nearly word for word as they had in the first two debates. It was like someone was just pulling the strings on the Obama and McCain dolls barking out recordings of the stump speeches they gave in the first two debates. McCain barked "no more $3 million projectors" and Obama droned on about McCain's big cuts for Exxon Mobil.

Then, I was introduced to "Joe the Plumber." Joe the Plumber would remain a fixture throughout the night's debate. In response to the very first question, McCain pounced on his new best friend "Joe the Plumber." Joe was someone who spoke up at an Obama campaign stop stating that because his small business was worth more than $250,000, he would be subject to higher taxes under Obama's leadership. McCain introduced the idea of Joe the Plumber right away and stuck with him throughout the entire debate.

"Congratulations Joe, you're rich!" exclaimed McCain at one point.

I wonder if Joe knew he was going to be the centerpiece of McCain's positions tonight?

I wonder if he was a McCain campaign plant at some Obama event? Or merely an innocent bystander who was snatched up by the McCain campaign as a team mascot against his will--like a reluctant goat from a local petting zoo.

I have to admit though that I DID feel better when Joe the Plumber was introduced, if only for the reason that he was a new character in the absurd marathon reality TV show that the campaign has become.

Joe the Plumber got things heated up in a hurry.

For a short while, the debate moved on to other issues for which Joe the Plumber apparently had no opinion. Bob Schieffer whipped out the butane lighter and tried with all of his dignified and repressed might to set the debate on fire with the provocative question of: Are either of you willing to say to each other's faces the sort of things that you've been saying about each other in your ads?

As far as Joe. Of course McCain would use the fear tactics on the nation, as is a method used by the Republican Party exclusively as of late. As a former 45 year Arizonan - too bad McCain didn't mention that under his administration Joe won't have a business at all - since he is a illegal immigrant supporter for his developer buddies - Joe's job in Arizona has already been "insourced" to the illegals!

The bureaucracy in this country is incredible, and so is our complicated election system. Hope next time in order to save us from 2 years of garbage and marketing, we go back to the old way in the Constitution. Each citizen votes for two members of Congress, one of which cannot be from his home state. The one with the highest votes wins, the one second is the VP (thus not selected for "corporate" political party purposes). The winner announced in the Senate after polling day. End of story, and end of this ridiculous exercise now in excess....and lies.

First Joe pushes his way through the crowd, Gets media attention, Then so unlike an average Joe, Seems to relish the attention, Now with the help of his lawyer, working on what could be a lucaritive book deal, Should we snitch to the IRS so Joe will pay back those delinquent taxes he accrued under a Repub Abmim? PUH-LEEEEZE

interesting article. it was pretty funny- how joe the plumber became the fourth person at the debate (besides the two candidates and the moderator.)

I think McCain could have brought up the issue without involving this guy personally. That being said, I'm having a hard time understanding why Joe is now being attacked since all he did was ask Obama a question. Even if he was a plant, Obama is the one who said he wanted to "spread the wealth around." No one forced him to say that. Obviously his supporters think the gaff might harm him politically, and I understand that, but shredding a guy for asking a simple question is a bit over the top. Nice coverage by the way.

(continued) "and to our nation that 8 years of the worst president in history, Republican George W. Bush. He has completely destroyed our economy and our standing abroad and, hopefully, if we're lucky, he won't have us bombing some other country that was minding its own business before he leaves office. History will not be kind to "W." I do want to salute Tony Vega for his command of the English language, if not his views on the candidates this year. Obama is not closely tied to the "terrorist" you mention (Ayers...see article on AC) and Ayers was protesting an unjust war using the wrong means, which Obama has condemned. The Keating Five scandal, which McCain was embroiled in, goes to the heart of our economic mess, and that seems to have avoided mention while the "terrorist" label slips trippingly from the tongue and pen. Barack Obama is not a terrorist and to suggest same DOES show the desperation of the GOP this year. We'll be in good hands with the man from Illinois.

...(continued) politics in the age of television IS about the way the candidate appears and what sound bite is used and whether he can debate well or is a hot-head who comes off as sarcastic, patronizing, condescending and angry. The GOP is hurting. I've been inside the Excel Center, which looked nothing like our nation's make-up, and been inside the Pepsi Center, which did. I think that the only hope for the GOP to avoid complete extinction as a viable political force is to (somehow) tone down the crazy-sounding fringies, wherever they are, and get back the youth who flocked over to Ron Paul's Rally for America at the Target Center in Minneapolis. where I also was in residence. True, there were some crazies and fringies there, but there was a lot of excitement and youth and it was a cross-section of America, not just ranting religious right-wingers who want to reverse Roe v Wade no matter what. The GOP needs to be thinking long-term about how to bind up the damage to their party (and

(continued)...with Vicki L. Sullivan's comment that Obama is not an FDR, Lincoln or Kennedy. It was the Old Lion of the Senate, Ted Kennedy, and Caroline Schlossberg Kennedy who saw, in Obama, what they had recognized in their own father and brother. (hence their enthusiastic endorsement). Lest you think that only other Democrats would endorse Obama, Christopher Buckley, son of William F. Buckley, quit his post at his father's magazine ("the National Review") over the Palin pick and endorsed Obama, as has no less a Republican elder statesman as Jim Leach (R, Iowa, for many years). "Joe the Plumber" WAS a 'plant" and has been discredited. The GOP is even using men in a SQUIRREL SUIT to try to show a link to ACORN! The "American Idol" thing mentioned by someone else is of longstanding status quo: the good-looking handsome candidate will often win out over the nerdy, scary, cranky one (JFK/Nixon, so don't jump to conclusions that I'm pointing fingers at this year's duo). Politics, in the

Quotes from Tony Vega comment(s) above: "All patriotic Americans should be desperate while watching a great nation erode...." Yes, Tony, I'm feeling pretty desperate for some REAL leadership, after 8 years of "W." I'm not advocating (for or agin') socialism, but I am desperate to find a leader who is even-tempered, intelligent (forget about the "sitting down to have a beer" thing), can restore our tarnished reputation abroad, has a grasp of the economic problems we face, and has a great "Think Tank" of advisors backing him up, including a VP well-qualified to step in should the need arise. There is only one candidate this year who can lay claim to the intellect, temperament and leadership potential to try to keep this great country from totally self-destructing, and that candidate is not the bona fide war hero, whose experiences may have scarred him for life in the temperament department (and, God bless him, how could it have done otherwise?) Both men are true patriots. I disagree wit

Joe the Plumber is a fraud, and like you mused, probably a Republican plant.

CAN ANYONE GET ON AND BE PUBLISHED AT 5:30???

Posted on 10/16/2008 at 3:10:17 PM

I'm back and in response to Tony's comment, go read my latest article on Joe-not-a-plumber. And since I wrote it, word has come out that h's a tax delinquent in addition to not complying with Ohio plumbing licensure laws and being someone who will not pay one cent increase under the Obama tax plan and being a relative of Keating son in law who was sentenced to jail in the Keating 5 scandal. "You're no plumber, Joe!"
