Golf is one of those recreational sports that has to be played in order to be fully appreciated. For those who are seeking to begin playing the game, it can be a little overwhelming at times. Here are some tips to help out the beginner golfer and give you a better understanding of the game.

First, I always advise new golfers to learn as much as they can about the game before playing that first round. Understanding the terminology and basic etiquette is just as important as being able to drive the ball straight down the fairway.

The internet is a great place for finding more information on golf, and I highly recommend spending the time reading up on game.

As a beginner golfer I would suggest buying a pre-owned set of golf clubs first. Don't worry about whether it comes with a 60 degree lob wedge, or titanium, carbon filled head on the driver, etc. Once you're got some rounds under your belt and decide you love the game, you can always upgrade later.

Take some golf lessons. This is something that should be a must. If you truly want to learn how to play golf, and enjoy the game, then get a few golf lessons. They are not that expensive and they're the best investment you can make. Every beginner should take a few lessons.

Play the forward tees. Yes, it may look more impressive to play the very back "Tiger" tees, but it won't do anything for your golf game. Instead of a more manageable 160 yard par 3, you could be trying to hit 210 yards from the back tees. That is only going to destroy your confidence and cause you a great deal of frustration.

Having good golf etiquette is also important out on the course. Not only will it save you a lot of embarrassment, but your playing companions will appreciate it. Some of the most important tips in this area include:

1. Never talk next to someone who is getting ready to hit their shot.

2. Always be ready to play your shot when it's your turn. No one likes slow play.

3. Always repair your divots out on the fairway and your ball marks on the green.

Takeaways
  • As a beginner golfer I would suggest buying a pre-owned set of golf clubs first.
  • Play the forward tees.
  • Having good golf etiquette is also important out on the course.
