How to Write Different Types of Poetry
This is a great explanation of different types of poetry. I have used this in my classroom on many occasions. It is great for a Language Arts teacher!
Emotion Poem
Choose and emotion and describe it using the five senses.
* Words that could be used are: love, hatred, injustice, anger, sorrow, sadness, joy, happiness, insecurity, peace, jealousy, pride, anxiety, hope fear, loneliness, or any other emotion you may think of.
* For example:
Love is _____________.
Love smells like_______________________.
Love tastes like________________________.
Love sounds like_______________________.
Love feels like_________________________.
Love looks like________________________.
Love is _________________.
Collage Poem
You need to find pictures FIRST. Cut out the facial features you are including. Then paste them on your paper. You are going to describe each feature using similes. For example:
- My eyes are as bright as the sun. (Your eyes in the collage should be cut from a picture of a sun.)
Haiku Poem
5 syllables
7 syllables
5 syllables
For Example:
Spring
The wind is blowing.
The rain is pounding so hard.
April is stormy.
Limerick Poem
You will write a poem with an AABBA scheme. Your first two lines will have 3 definite syllables. Your next two will have 2 and the last one will have 3.
For example:
-Mrs. Judy went to the store
She didn't close the door
She came out and screamed
And had a bad dream
And woke up early the next morning.
Alliteration Poem (Tongue Twister)
Use one letter of the alphabet and make a tongue twister!! Example: Peter Piper picked a peck of picked peppers.......
Acrostic Poem
You are to use your name and make the poem.
Example: S weet
U nique
E xciting
Concrete Poem
You will choose an item and draw out the item using the words.
For Example: If you were to draw a nail, you would use the word nail over and over to draw out the image of a nail.

This is a poem that is a number of words on each line. 1st line = 1 word
2nd line = 2 words
3rd line = 2 words
4th line = 3 words
