ISRAEL AGAINST THE WORLD

Let's back the truck up a bit here. I've been reading quite a bit lately about how the Palestinian terrorists are the good guys and the Israelis deserve whatever they have had to suffer in the past and no doubt will suffer in the future.

The pro Arab group wants us to believe that Israel is illegally occupying land not ceded to it way back in 1948. As Lorrie Goldstein says, "Gee. I wonder who started those wars, who threatened to drive whom into the sea and which nation was attacked for the first time by its "Arab neighbours" the day after it was created in 1948?" The pro active group conveniently ignores the fact that Israel today occupies only 77% of the land originally given it in 1948. It seems to be too big a leap for them to make that perhaps if Israel were given back the land given to them back then, maybe they would give back some of their "illegally" occupied territory. By the way, just who is occupying that other 23%? Are they there legally? Food for thought.

The pro Arab group wants to discount the Camp David Accords. As David Frum writes, "At Camp David in 2000, for example, Bill Clinton and Ehud Barak offered Yasser Arafat the most favourable deal ever offered to the Palestinians. Arafat rejected the offer, and started a war to get better terms." You remember Clinton? The guy who only had one bone in his body and it didn't turn out to be a spine. If you can't get a liberal like him to give you everything you want, you've got major mental issues.

Israel would be happy to be left alone

Of course neither side is completely clean in the struggle. And although I find myself mostly in agreement with Paul, Jim makes good points too. And to those who staunchly defend Israel, what if it was your land? What if the natives in your area were given your homes? Might you not be a little angry? So although there have been many wrongs throughout the history of the area, the newest wrongs are the most remembered. The truth is, the problems there can't be solved as long as religion is the prominent player. Do away with religion, and see how much easier it is for people to get along...

Paul, you complain about Israel destroying Palestinian homes and witholding their tax money. Fair enough. But if you check your history, the Palestinians treated Jews as second class citizens from back as far as 800 AD. Their houses were looted and they were charged higher taxes than anyone else. And they got nothing for it. They were robbed and murdered in the streets without any thought of repercussion to the Arabs. Jealous that they are finally getting some of their own back?

I don't know about "Stray Reader", but I listen to the news, Paul. Ahmadinejad has made a huge point of bragging up his intentions to have nukes. He has made a huge point of saying he thinks Israel should be removed from existence. He has refused the demands of the international community that he stop his nuclear experiments. Isn't he still the pres. of Iran? I'm sure Israel has nukes and it's a testament to their integrity that they haven't used them. What do you think would happen if any other country, nuclear armed, were threatened in the same way? Any other country would make a preemptive strike, unless it's pres. was a wimp like Clinton. How's that for "new material?"

Also, Stray Reader, Israel has probably has hundreds of its own nukes pointed at Iran right now. Under these circumstances, what should Israel expect other than Iran wanting to develop nukes? That is if they even desire to...

Stray Reader, just because you only hear about Palestinian suicide bombers, doesn't erase thefact that Israel is killing Palestinians, destroying their homes, witholding their tax money and occupying their lands. These are realities that the US media ignores in favor of the poor-little-Israel angle. News flash Stray Reader--Iran doesn't have nuclear weapons, hasn't expressed a desire to make any and even if they do begin to create weapons, they are about 10 years away from having even one missile ready to launch at Israel--So maybe you should calm down.

Stray Reader, thanks for reading and for the comment. Sometimes I think Paul is more Palestinian thann some Muslims.

Funny, Paul, how we only get to hear about atrocities AGAINST Israel. Guess your idea of Palestinians being the innocent victims loses a little water on that one. I suppose you even object to Israel making pre-emptive strikes against Iranian nuke facilities. Maybe they should wait til Iran attacks them before they do something about it? Maybe you should become a "human shield" and sit around in front of the Iranian nuke spots to see if Israel will really fire or not.

Jim--You are off on this one. None of what you are saying excuses Israel's illegal occupation and subjugation of Palestinians. Going bacj to the very early days of the zionist movement there has been an effort to marginalize the Palestinians, including very early terrorism perpetrated upon Palestinians by zionist settlers. Even on the day they declared independence in 48', Israel claimed the majority of the land set aside by the UN to be split evenly between Israel and a Palestinian state. Israel occupied the rest of that land in 67', but has refused to give it up as required by international law, and have continued to build settlements on that land, also against international law. Worst of all is their ill-treatment and murder of Palestinians in the occupied territories. Israel is not some innocent victim here by any stretch

Well said, Mr. Stillman. As for you, Paul.....

Thank you for your article; it is a breath of honest fresh air. And this from me, a professed left-wing liberal! The saddest aspect of this is that had the Palestinians chosen to join with Israel in 1948 to create a modern and economically stable country, there would now be a land truly of "milk and honey", industrial, national and universal health care and all of the rest. Instead, the Palestinians bought the rhetoric from uninvolved Arab states that the Jews would be driven into the sea and that they, the Palestinians, need only to withdraw from the 20th century and wait. What a horrid waste.

Don, the "go pray with your muslim friends" thing is getting old, and really doesn't even make sense on any serious or comedic level--get some new material.

Posted on 01/02/2007 at 6:01:00 PM

Give up, Paul. Your liberal slant is getting you nowhere. Unless you live in a cave and hear no news, you have to have heard that Israel is on the side of right. All the spin you can come up with won't make them the bad guys in this. Get you mat and spend the day with your muslim friends.

You have your sources and I have mine, Paul. Like I said, I read both liberal and conservative papers to try to keep an even keel and make an informed opinion. From what you have written on my articles I can't help but think that if you don't hate freedom, you certainly seem to defend dictatorships a bit much. I suppose that we will have to agree to disagree on this subject.

Posted on 01/02/2007 at 10:01:00 AM

I ask again--how do you explain away the Israeli pilots and other military who refuse orders for operations in the occupied territories? Do they hate freedom as well? Or maybe they are all just crazy, self hating Israelis? You have been getting only one side of the story Youranter.
