There are some technologies that will have a large impact on the world in years to come. They range from leaps in the industry of cell-research, to finding a cure for cancer, and even to making cars that will not emit any toxic gases into our environment. But, the technology that will end up changing the entire world of computing in a massive fashion is: Grid Computing. Defined clearly, Grid Computing is a type of parallel and distributed system that enables the sharing, selection, and aggregation of geographically distributed "autonomous" resources dynamically at runtime depending on their availability, capability, performance, cost, and users' quality-of-service requirements (Buyya: 1). To understand it better, Grid Computing can simply be seen as applying resources from many computers in a network-at the same time-to a single problem; usually a problem that requires a large number of processing cycles or access to large amounts of data. When a person thinks about a technology that has the capability of Grid Computing, it often gets muddled in the fact that it is such a virtual term. When you say Grid Computing, you are talking about something that you will never be able to physically touch, and most likely never be able to see with your own eyes. Instead, we have a technology that in itself can do nothing, but combined with all of our current technologies can provide us with something world changing. The technology is still emerging, and still has few people that truly understand it, but the processes that it can encompass and the time that it could end up saving all of us, is too good to overlook.
