Government Assistance Programs Should Require Drug Tests

Treat Government Assistance Program Recipients the Same as Wage-earners

All recipients of government assistance should be tested and required to successfully pass controlled substance screening as a condition of assistance entitlement eligibility!

There are many workplaces where either periodic or no-notice drug screening is a basic condition for continued employment. Many other work environments, have, as a basic prerequisite of employment either a ban on smoking or drinking. While these aren't very popular employer-imposed restrictions, nonetheless they are well tolerated by millions of workers who earn incomes, and pay taxes. Their earnings create the funds that are routinely handed out each month to those receiving public assistance of one kind or another from various state and federal agencies.

Why have we never imposed similar screening restrictions upon those who seek and accept government assistance? Wouldn't it be a "good" thing if we encouraged that portion of our population who accept the monetary assistance of wage-earners to also be drug-free, non-smoking, alcohol-free citizens? Doesn't it seem that the benefit derived from government assistance would be multiplied if large portions (any portion) of the government assistance dollar were not spent on drugs, tobacco and alcohol?

Why would it be insulting to those who receive government assistance for them to be required to demonstrate that they are staying drug-free, through urine testing? Is it too much meddling in a welfare recipient's life to provide monetary assistance that specifically excludes its use for payment for alcohol and tobacco products?

Did You Know?
27 million persons aged 12 to 64 live in families that receive government assistance.

Heavy alcohol use is higher among persons aged 35 to 49 who draw assistance.

Illicit drug use is higher in assisted families than in unassisted families.

Oooh.. that's a good idea! I agree that it can be humiliating for some who are just temporarily in a tough situation, but .... get over it. If you are working to fix the situation then you have nothing to be ashamed of. We had to be on food stamps and WIC after we were first married because my husband's business closed down with no notice at all. Unemployment was at an all time high in the early 80's and we had a new baby. Yeah I hated it, but it got us through until we could change our status. I get frustrated by those who use the assistance as a way of life. I work at a bank now and believe me, I see alot of that.

I think I do agree with the drug testing, although Ninigurl makes a great point about the cost of that. I am not sure that the govt. should require all benifit recipients from being tobacco/alcohol free. I see your point about "wasting money" on these things. However, what if someone goes to a wedding and drinks a (free) glass or two of champange/wine? Should they be cut off from their benifits? I think not.

A little out there, but I can say that even WIC requires you to show up (with child) so that they can assess how they are growing. It isn't because they are nosy, they just want to make sure that you are actually feeding your child the benefits that you receive. Your system sounds a lot like meeting with a P.O. Being poor isn't a crime and every case should be evaluated on its own merits. I agree with any program that requires work for welfare.

To Ninigurl: Research indicates that many, not ALL, recipients DO drink, use drugs or smoke. Exactly how much more humiliating can it be for those who receive benefits funded by tax dollars, than those who are paying the taxes and being routinely tested?

Have you ever been on public assistance of any kind? Do you realize how humiliating enough it is for some? Now you want to take more dignity away? Not everyone on public assistance drinks, smokes or does drugs and for you to ASSUME they do is asinine! To spend more tax dollars required to perform and test individuals on a regular basis is ludicrous on top of what is already alloted for public assistance.
