Now on DVD: "Frank Miller's Sin City". It's called "Frank Miller's" although Robert Rodriguez actually directed it. Rodriguez wanted to share credit with the original comic book's creator, and had him on the set as an advisor/co-director to make sure they stayed faithful to the comic: a move that cost Rodriguez his Director's Guild card, and a lot of studio work down the road.
Was it worth it? Well: "Sin City" is a very entertaining or disturbing experiment, depending on your point of view. The ultimate expression of style over substance. Miller's original stories are ultra-violent pulp fiction with none of the subtle allegory that John D. MacDonald brought to the pulps. Basically an adolescent boy's dream world where all the men are indestructible and all the women are either waitress or hookers. I'm not saying that's a bad thing. Movies are supposed to be fantasy and Sin City succeeds on that level, but its two hours of a brutal car wreck and that can wear you out.
With four intersecting story lines, it's just enough to keep you interested: but honestly, Mickey Rourke's Marv is the star of this show, and personally: I would have been happy just following his story arc.
