The Backyardigans is a very cute, broadway style, musical show for kids that airs on Nick Jr. My 3 year old loves it and since he also loves books, I was happy to find this Deep Sea Countdown book at Walmart recently.

The Book

This is a children's board book that measures 6 x 5 inches, so it's a good size for small hands. It is a board book (with hard pages) and the cover has a softer cover over the board.

The book was written by Justin Spelvin and illustrated by Warner McGee. It has 26 pages and the subject is counting from 1 to 10 while going on a deep sea adventure with the characters from The Backyardigans. The book is recommended for any age, but a child under the age of 5 or 6 won't be able to read all the words on their own.

The book, so far, has held up nicely and seems to be quite durable. My son is rough with books sometimes and this one is his favorite so it has been loved a good bit lately. Thankfully it shows no wear to date.

The Story

This is a fun story about The Backyardigans who are searching for a sunken treasure chest at the bottom of the ocean. The main characters are 4 of the Backyardigans themselves... Pablo, Tyrone, Uniqua and Tasha. They have many interesting encounters while on their adventure, including diving in a submarine that is attacked by an octopus, getting lost and swimming with beautiful mermaids.

In addition to the story's adventure plot, the book is also about learning to count from 1 to 10. On each page a number is mentioned and your child is able to count that many different objects along the way. For example, on the first page there are ten jellyfish and the number "10" appears on the page as well. The book counts down from 10 to 1, and on the last page the sunken treasure is found and the featured number is "1" (for 1 treasure chest).

So, on each page your child will learn about the next phase of the adventurous treasure hunt, they will see a number between 1 and 10, and they will be able to count interesting objects on every page to coincide with the number that is shown.

The illustrations in this book are fun, colorful and eye-catching.
