Inside Look: The Circulatory System

The Circulatory System carries blood through the body. It includes the heart, arteries, veins, and capillaries.
The heart pumps blood through the blood vessels. Arteries carry blood from the heart to all parts of the body. Veins return blood from the body to the heart. Capillaries are extremely small blood vessels connecting the arteries and veins. They lie close to almost all the cells of the
body. The blood that travels through the arteries, veins, and capillaries carries food, oxygen, and waste products to and from the cells.
The body has two systems of blood circulation. One system carries blood to and from the lungs. The other carries blood to and from the other parts of the body. Blood from all parts of the body enters the right side of the heart, which pumps it into the lungs. In the lungs, the blood releases carbon dioxide and takes in oxygen. Veins from the lungs return the blood to the left side of the heart, which pumps it into arteries that carry it throughout the body.
